BOTTLE GATHERING.

SCHOOL CHILDREN’S EFFORTS. TOTAL OF 15,375 COLLECTED. During the past ten days the children of the local District High School have been busy on a bottle-gathering campaign, and the result has exceeded all expectations, no fewer than 15,375 bottles of all descriptions having been gathered and delivered at. the Drill Hall, the floor; space of which is an amazing sight. The object of gathering bottles as a means of raising additional money for school ground improvements was suggested to the children by the headmaster (Mr G. H. Taylor), and as a result of their efforts it is anticipated that between £35 and £4O will be realised. This amount will carry with it a Government £ for £ so the total amount available will be in the vicinity of £BO, which sum will enable the committee to carry out further, improvements to the school grounds. Every child in the school has worked with a will, and the borough has, been systematically canvassed for bpttles.

The directors of the Paeroa Brewery Co., Ltd., together with MY; S. Stevens, have lent valuable assistance to the school in its undertaking. In addition to making a generous offer for the disposal of the bottles they have given the services of an expert packer for a day to assist in packing such bottles as are to be forwarded jo Auckland for sale. The committee s thanks are also extended to the shopkeepers who have given packing cases, Mr W. Hall for sacks, Mr C. Hudson for his offer of free cartage ■to the wharf, and all others who have come forward to assist with the packing- ■ , .. . At a special meeting of the school committee last evening it was decided to give a special prize to the class that collected the largest number of saleable bottles realising the greatest value. Of the- total of 15,376 bottles collected there were 2511 quart and 2113 pint beer bottles, 2713 whisky and wine, 507 coffee, 378 vinegar, 217 pickle. 3104 sauce and miscellaneous, 3236 medicine, and 745 aerated water bottles. Thus it will be seen that the grading and packing of such a large and varied number of bottles is a huge undertaking.
