Sydney is soon to have the first underground railway in the Southern Hemisphere in operation. This will be from the Central railway station, through the business portion of the city, to Circular/ Quay. Trains come 'to this station from all parts of. the State, and the present passenger services above ground are so congested and the streets so narrow that the "tube” has been found necessary to meet the situation.. The line, which will be two miles in length, will shortly be open for traffic. About 10,000 tons of rock was dislodged from Pafitutu, New Plymouth, last week, when another big shot was fired in connection with the quarrying operations for stone for the extension of the breakwater and reclamation works (states the ‘'Taranaki Herald”). The charge consisted of a ton of explosive,, and had been lodged at the head of a tunnel driven from the eastern face. Practically al', the rock dislodged was removed from the top, and from, now on it will be impossible to climb the old landmark by the usual routs, the. upper portion of the rock having been in parts blasted away. The officials were entirely satisfied with the results of the shot, sufficient bajtter has no.v been secured on the quarry face to permit the quarrying ofi a splendid outer, op of solid stone near the base of the pinnacle, which, to all appearances, should come away in large blocks very suitable for use on the extension.
