The engineer reported as follows:— “Owing to the weather conditions having been most unfavourable during the three weeks which have lapsed.since my last report the progress made in regard to works in hand has been somewhat, disappointing. “Repairs have been put in hand during the month on Pipiroa, Kopuarahi, and ‘ Piako roads ; also main Netherton-Turua road between Carter’s corner and Tr,oughton’s. Two teams have' been engaged on each of these roads. On the latter road the worst roads will be filled within a day or two. The road will be considerably improved as far as the Kerepeehi corner by the end of the month with metal from Hikuftaia. Other roads of similar importance will also have received consideration. •‘Newman’s Road Tramline. —Over 800 sleepers, costing 37s 6d a hundred, have been otbained from Mr Newman’s farm. Approximately 400 lineal feet of white pine rickers were cut on Mr Ansford’s farm and fitted in position to carry the tramline at the approach to the Waihou river. Mr Ansford gave the Umber and lenA a horse to haul same free of charge. One line of tramline has been laid and two bridges constructed across drains to extend the line on to Huirau Road. “Hikutaia Metal.—Some delay has been experienced in 'opening out the quarry. The contractor states that he can now carry on without, any further delays. Approximately 4001 cubic yards of metal have been quarried and broken into the hopper. I propose calling tenders, to close about the end of the month, for carting metal’to jetty, and also for punting same to the western bank of the Waihou River. “Metal for Pipiroa Riding.—Negotiations are now in hand to meet the requirements of roads adjacent to the Piako River, and I hope to be in a position to report favourably at an early date. " Piako Road.—Repairs tc this road have been delayed owing to tides being unsatisfactory for landing metal at, Turua. I am arranging for supplies to come to hand during the current week, X " Mangatarata Bridge.—l have examined the bridges in this area; and I find that three new bridges are required ranging from 14ft to 20 ft. spans. I find also that the bridge crossing the Waitakaruru stream off Mangajtarata Rpad is not taking the flood water, and in consequence the approaches keep washing away. This bridge requires an additional span of about 16 feet. I estimate that it will take £6OO to meet the expenditure that will be required in the near future for reconstructing the bridges referred to. “Rawerawe Bridge.—The timber is now on the ground, and T have arranged for the work to be put in hand without delay. “Miranda Back Road. —I have examined the hill on this road adjacent to Mr* Stretton’s property and find that the hill can be cut down for £4O. The spoil could be used for improving the road along the flat.”
