DISTRICT NEWS.

NGATEA. PUBLIC LIBRARY. A meeting of the Ngatea public library was held on Saturday evening. The librarian reported that 140 new books had been purchased,, bringing the total up to about 250. Mr W. GHayward was elected to fill the vacancy on the committee caused by the resignation of Mr E. Walton. The annual subscription would be 10s per year or 5s per half year, but where two or more members of one family wish to join the second and subsequent subscription shall be ss. A deposit of 2s 6d per book will be required, and subscribers be permitted to take two books only at one time. Books must not be kept longer than a fortnight. The library will be open on Tuesday afternoons from 3.30 to 4.30, and on Friday evenings from 6.30 to 7.30 o’clock, commencing on Tuesday, May 29. . . Arrangements were made for several small improvements to the library building. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Miss M. Norris, for supplying afternoon tea to a working bee, and to the chair. FARMERS’ VETERINARY CLUB. A meeting of the executive committee of the Farmers’ Veterinary Club was held on Saturday afternoon. Mr C. H. Waite presided. Mr H. Schwartz was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr H. Berney. It was decided that, a list of outstanding accounts should be put in the hands of the club’s solicitor. Arrangements were made to canvass Turua for members. 't was pointed out that subscriptions for the new year were now due. WALKING. FOOTBALL CLUB BALL. On Friday last the annual ball of the Waikino Football Club took place at the Victoria Hall. The hall and supper rooms were beautifully decollated with the club colours—-black and gold. The function was a great success, visitors being present from Waihi. Paeroa, and ether parts of the district. The music was supplied by Mr C. Cater’s orchestra, and Messrs J, Jessney and McSwney capably acted as M’s.C. A euchre tournament took place, the winners being Mrs Gallagher and Mr Pickett. \ delicious supper was served at about 10.30. Extras were supplied by Miss Shaw. The arrangements for the function were in the capable hands of the secretary. Mr E. Kephan.
