Muir’s Reefs Gold Mine, Te Puke, has been rendered idle by the action of the contractors and wages men ceasing work on Saturday last. About a hundred men had been employed in and around the mine and battery, 80 per cent, pf whom were engaged on contract, the others being on wages. The decision of the men tp cease work was the outcome of an announcement by the management tc reduce the pay of the wages men,, 30 as to. bring it mor.e into line with the rate paid by the mining companies in Waihi. The contractors, who would not be affected by the cut,, decided to down tools in sympathy with the wages men. It is reported that about 40 of the number purpose leaving for Australia, while about 20 have returned to Waihi.
