PLAINS COUNTY COUNCIL

ANNUAL MEETING. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. The statutory annual meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council was held on Wednesday last for the "purpose of electing a chairman. There were present Crs: J. C. Miller, C. W. Harris, J. F. Mayn, T. McLoughlin. J. H. Nicholson, W. Madgwick, C. W. Parfitt, W. G. Hayward, H. Ha/re, the clerk ( Mr E. Walton), and the engineer (Mr J. Higgins). The clerk called for nominations for chairman for the ensuing year. Cr. Harris said that he had great pleasure in proposing Cr. Miller. He was sure everyone would agree that the work done by C|r. Miller as. chairman was right royal work, and a credit; to him. He had spared neither time nor money, and It would be hard to find anyone in the county tp equal him fqr the post. Cr. Parfitt, in seconding the motion, said that all recognised the good work done by the late chairman. The ratepayers .. were . evidently satisfied with the work of the Council, as they had returned all the old members. This should be an inducement for Cr. Miller to carry on as chairmap for another term. There being np further nominations the motion that Cr. Miller be chairman for the ensuing twelve months was carried, - Cr. Miller then took the chair, and in returning thanks said that the .post of chairman was not altogether a very pleasant one, but he Was assured tha* the members of the Council were loyal and that they would’ know how to treat him in the future. He congratulated all the members on regaining their seats and welcomed the new members. The Council had had a bad three years, as it had started when, everything was at the Lop price and labour was very scarce. The ratepayers had complained that 'they were not getting value for their money. The Council did not regret anything it had done in the past, and the fact of the old Council being returned was a vote of confidence from the ratepayers. Cr. W. Madgwick thanked the chairman for his welcome, and expressed the hope that they would work together and get on well. Cr. J. H. Nicholson also thanked the chairman for his welcome and expressed the hope that all members would work in concord one with another.
