Regret was expressed at the meeting on Monday that so few mothers took any interest in the movement to establish a branch of the Plunket Society in Paeroa. After the stirring appeal made by visiting ladies last week, and reported in the “Gazette,” it was hoped that a branch would be formed. A meeting was called by the Mayoress, Mr s W. Marshall, but the response was so poor that those ladies present did not feel that it was wise to proceed with the matter. Mr James Watt, the professional golfer engaged by the Paeroa Golf Club, arrived this morning, and has commenced his . duties at the links. Attention is directed to the Club’s advertisement appearing in this issue. The report of the discussion, on the notice of motion relative to making an endeavour to have licenses restored in Paeroa at the Chamber of Commerce meeting last night is unavoidably held over until our Friday's issue.
A series of Gazette notices appointing the statutory closing day in accordance with the results of the polls in various districts serve as a reminder of how far the country is from uniformity of choice of the weekly half-holiday. Of eleven districts, the notices show, four have chosen Wednesday, three Thursday, and four Saturday.
The efficacy of advertising has been very evident, in Hamilton. Within the last two months some seventeen newspapers have had advertising canvassers thoroughly working the Waikato town for advertisements. No doubt the Waikato Winter Show is now famous, and is an eagerly-looked-for event throughout New Zealand. Newspapers published outside the district have realised the large numbers of people who visit Hamilton during the Winter Show week. The amount of outside capital that is circulated in Hamilton during that week is quite a large sum. The business people of the town, fully realising the advantages of the big show in their midst, are sufficiently enterprising to make the most of their opportunities. They are prepared to spend money freely on advertising in newspapers published, outside their own town. By so doing people from afar are able to read in their own papers just what to purchase and where to go on their arrival in .Hamilton. The value of advertising is clearly demonstrated by the success met with and the enormous proportion that the Waikato Winter Show has assumed. The executive are indeed to be congratulated on the sound business acumen of their secretary. He is a sound believer in judicious advertising, and attributes the major part of the success of the show each year to careful and systematic advertising.
The ingenuity shown by a farmer near Milton during the recent flood (says the Free Press) was responsible for saving a litter of young pigs owned by him. As the flood waters on his farm gradually rose he obtained the kitchen table, which he turned upside down, and, having put some straw into the "ark,” he put the young pigs on it. As the water rose in the sty the table kept its unusual burden safe from a watery grave.
