OHINEMURI COUNTY.
meeting OF council, ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. The annual statutory meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was held this morning, for the election of the chairman. The following councillors were present: J. Johnson, JH. Vowles H. Ml Corbett, P. Corbett, A. D. McGuire, F. C. Hubbard, W. F. Johnstone, A. R. Robinson, and the > county clerk (Mr R. W. Evans). Nominations were asked for the position of chairman of the Counici for the ensuing term. Cr. H. M. Coirbett said that it was usually considered the privilege of the senior councillor to nominate a chairman at the annual meeting. Therefore, it gave him very great pleasure in nominating Cr. Robinson for the position. During his last term as chairman of the Council Cr. Robinson had rendered solid service and had discharged his duties in a
very capable and impartial mannei. ■ He had acquired a sound grip of the Council’s affairs and had tackled its difficulties and problems with vigour. Several important undertakings had been carried out under Cr., Robinson’s direction, and the speaker considered that he was eminently suited to again fill the office. He had the respect and whole-hearted support of the councillors. Cr. Robinson had displayed more than ordinary interest in a better roads scheme, and he trusted that during a further term as chairman that scheme would be
brought to a successful conclusion. ,Cr. McGuire seconded the nomination. and said he wished to endorse -the remarks of Cr. Corbett. He, too, •? considered that Cr. Robinson should ■ be accorded a further term as chair- ' man of the Council. /There appeared to be no doubt that during the last
• term he had given entire satisfaction -1, and was re-election.. There being no farther nominations, Cr. Robinson was declared duly elected.
fn rising to reply Cr. Robinson was greeted with applause. He thanked the- councillors for the honour they had accorded him, and the confidence
reposed in him. He said that he had -always endeavoured to discharge his - duties satisfactorily, and he hoped that by strict attention to the interests of the county the district would prosper, and that further; improvements and necessary work ■ would be carried put. The chairman . said he was not prepared to lay down • any particular policy at that meeting, and he had no desire to discuss the financial aspect at present. That could be considered in due course. The chairman took the opportunity of congratulating those councillors who had been returned unopposed intheir various ridings. He also wished to offer the Council’s hearty congratulations to Cr McGuire on his decisive victory. The chairman briefly welcomed the new councillors, Messrs F. ■ C. Hubbard, G. H. Vowles, and P. Corbett, and hoped that they would have a pleasant term of office. The chairman asked the members to accept an apology for absence from Cr. S. H. Morgan who had undergone an operation in Thames Hospital. He was pleased to say, however, that he was now recovering satisfactorily. It was decided that the next meet-, ing of the Council should be held on June 14. .
Duffing the hearing of an alleged assault case at the Magistrate’s Court at Nelson (relates the “Mail”) a wit- > ness who said she was within a yard or two of the parties when the incident occurred was asked by counsel whether she could have heard the bad language-which it was stated had been used at the time. The witness, evidently • under the impression that the question was put in order to test her hearing, caused a. smile to go round, the Court by answering, I should hope I would.” Farm students at Stratford were treated by the Agricultural Department’s ■ instructor to a discourse on indigestion, relates the "Post.” The instructor showed a specimen of rubber hosing, which orignially was 21 feet long, in seven different pieces, an inch or two inches thick, taken from the'paunch of a four-year-old bullock in perfect health and condition killed at the Waitara freezing works eaffly in the year. Many people would hardly have believed such a thing was possible unless they had seen itHe used this illustration to show how difficult it was to treat such cases, not knowing the cause of the trouble.
