JERSEY BREEDERS.
THAMES VALLEY CLUB. A meeting of the Thames Valley Je’sey Breeders’ Club was held in •the Dairy Company’s board room, Paeroa on Friday morning. Mr B. JWalters presided. There were present Messrs G. Buchanan, K. Dean, R. Stock, senr., B. E. Veale, M. Crimmins, W. J. Hall, and W. F, Johnstone. PEDIGREE STOCK SALE. Mr Buchanan explained that the meeting had been called to discuss arrangements for the proposed sale of pedigree Jersey cattle to he held in Paerpa, Mr Walters said that, so far nothing had been done in that connection. It was very necessary to know what animals would be offering. Mr Buchanan said that he would like to see the sale arranged for a date immediately following the Auckland Winter Show in July. Mr Hall contended that July was too early to offer pedigree bulls. After further discussion it was decided that the sale should be held in Paeroa during the last week in September. A sub-committee with power to act* comprising Messrs Walters, Veale, Buchanan, and Hall, was set up to arrange with the Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Auctioneering Co., Ltd., to fix the day for the sale, and tp endeavour to arrange for Mr McCollough to auction the pedigree stock. USE OF SHOW PENS. The Hauraki A, and P. Association advised that it had granted the club the use of the show pens for the accommodation of the stock during the sale. It was decided to write to the show association and thank it, for the loan of its yards. THANKS. Mr Walters said that, the club’s greatest thanks and appreciation was due to Mr G. Buchanan for the assistance he had rendered to the club on the occasion of the recent demonstration of Jersey cattle. Messrs Hall and Veale supported the chairman’s remaks. Mr Buchanan said that it had given him real pleasure to have been able to do what little he had done. He had the interests of the club at hear.;, and the only way to make themselves felt was by individual help and effort. EXCHANGE OF VISITS. Mr Hall, said that when he was in Tauranga some of the Jersey breeders had asked him to arrange for some members of the Thames Valley Club to visit their district and arrange to give a demonstration. The chairman said he thought this side of the club’s activities should’ be fostered and encouraged. He contended that it was useless for the club to confine its. attention to its own district. It was necessary to extend its activities. Mr Veale said that if the members wished to create a demand for their pedigree stock it was necessary that they should visit other centres and make their strains known. IMPORTED BULL. The chairman said that as yet no reply had been received from the Channel Islands,, England, as regards the Club’s inquiry for a pedigree bull. Mr Buchanan said he thought that if any of the club members were going through Taranaki or Hawkes’ Bay they might make inquiries for a good bull. It was considered inadvisable to purchase a young bull, and that -t would be best to go in for a proved bull. BRANDING OF PEDIGREE CATTLEMr Walters said that at the present time many anomalies existed where pedigree- cattle were concerned. He told of instances where pedigree cattle had been sold in public saleyards, the breeding of such animals being attributed to possibly one particular breeder. He had known instances where the breeder named had never had the animals on his property, let alone be responsible for their breeding Mr Walters said the time was fully ripe when the public should be advised that unless a pedigree beast carried the registered brand of the Jersey Club members they should be very careful. He contended that no pedigree-animal should be offered for sale without bearing such brand. He thought the public should be projected as well as the breeders. Mr, Buchanan said he was entirely in accord with Mr Walters. Pedigree stock should be branded with the registered brand on a particular part of the body, while /grade animals could be branded on a different part. If that procedure was generally adopted a lot of misunderstanding would be overcome, and the confidence of the public would be assured. Mr Hall said he thought that the system of tattooing the ears of pedigree stock when young was a good one, and a satisfactory way of branding. Mr Veale thought that, the Club’s registered brand should be taken greater care of and more effectively used. WORDING ON SHOW PENSMr Walters said it had come under his notice that some A. and P. show associations were in the habit of posting the words “Channel Island Cattle” upon the pens of pedigree and grade Jerseys exhibited at shows. This was a wrong description, and was- merely a misnomer for Jersey cattle. He contended that Jersey cattle were a distinct breed, and were entitled to their own name. Channel Island cattle really comprised the three separate breeds, Jersey, Guernsey,
and Alderney. He thought that pos- , sibly the club might move in the mat- | ter of having the wrong righted. j The matter was held in abeyance j meantime. • j ACCIDENT TO SECRETARY. . Mr Walters said that he was pleas- ! ed to state that the Club’s secretary, , Mr J. Irwin, although still an inmate | of Thames Hospital, was making a j good recovery, and that his broken ! leg was healing satisfactorily. j (hi the motion of Mr Crimmins, j seconded by Mr Dean, it was decided j to convey the Club’s best wishes for a speedy recovery to Mr Irwin. I JThe meeting closed with the cus- j torr ary vote of thanks to the chair, i il
