FAREWELL EVENING
COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL. A farewell evening was tendered to Mr and Mrs J. Roach at the Central Theatre on Thursday evening last by the members and supporters of the West Football Club. Mr Roach, who is leaving Paeroa, has been an enthusiastic supporter of Rubby and an official of the West Club for manj years. He has always taken a keen iii'erest in the club's affairs, and has spared np pains to encourage the game in Paeroa. The club’ being fully appreciative of his services, took the opportunity of according him a complimentary . social and presentation. The decorations of the hall were both novel and pretty. The club’s colauis, black and white, were used with great effect, whilst suspended from the centre of the room was a football surrounded by various coloured lights. The enchre tournament, in charge of Miss Shaw, was held in the supper room, and attracted a record number of players, some 84 persons taking part. There was spirited competition for the valuable prizesi which had been generously donated by the local business people. Some exciting finishes resulted in Mrs W. H. Taylor securing the first prize for ladies, and Mi's W. Lipsham the second. The men’s prizes were won by Messis L. McNeil and C. Olsen respectively. About, 11 p.m. a delicious and dainty supper was served, under the capable direction of Mesdames 11. Poland, W. H. Taylor, W. J. Ellis, Shaw. C. Rolton, and a band of willing helpers. The decorations in the supper room were very artistic, and were greatly admired. Great credit is due to Mrs E. H. Andrews for the pleasing effect and perfect blending of the colour scheme carried out in the decorations. During the supper adjournment. Mr E'. Edwards, president of the West Football Club, on behalf of the club, presented Mrs Roach with a handbag and Mr Roach with a suit case. He deplored their' departure from Paeroa, and on behalf pf the gatheing wished them health, happiness, and prosperity in their) new sphere. Mr Roach feelingly thanked the gathering on behalf of Mrs Roach ami himself. The Rugby Union also presented Mrs Roach with a set of stainless knives and Mr oßach with a “kitchen friend.” Mr Edwards also made these preservations, after which cheers were given for the guests of the evening and “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” lustily sung. Dancing was continued until the •‘we sma’ ’oors.” The music, supplied by Mr Christian, was up to his usual high standard. Extras were played by Mrs F. S. Budd, and Mr D. Fisher, of Thames.
