RECORD WALK.

131 IN MILES 24 HOURS. According to “Miller’s Sporting Annual” the record distance walked in 24 hours is 131 miles 580 yards, which distance was covered at the Stadium in London by T. E. Hammond in 1908. This was six miles better than the distance reported to have been covered in the same space of time by Euchidas, an ancient, Greek citizen of Plataea, who went from that city to Delphi to bring the sacred fire. Euchidas, however, J found the outing rather more than his constitution would stand, for after handing

over the fire and saluting his fellow citizens he fell dead at, their feet. Another famous performance was put up by Joe Scott, a New Zealander, in England in 1888, when he walked 363 miles in 72 hours, doing twelve hours each day. The longest distance on record as being walked without a rest is 127 miles 542 yards by T. Payne in London in 1909—but this seems to have been done just for pleasure.
