In connection with the spearing at the mouth of the Hokio stream recently of an eel of the Puhi variety, weighing 23%1b, a local resident, points out some interesting facts regarding the annual migration to the sea of this species, (says the Levin, ■‘Chronicle”)/ It appears that 'he migrating eels, which average, perhaps, two pounds in. weight, are always headed by a couple of exceptionally large eels of the same variety. This fact is so well known'that special names have been given to these leaders. For instance, amongst the local Ngati-Maupoko tribe they are , known as “ruahine,” which means an “old woman.” Amongst the Ngati-Ruakawa and other local tribes they are called Tahi-.maro. A numbei of such eels always bring up the tail of these migrations, and it was one of these which was caught, the migration finishing usually at the end of this month. During the week two others of 181 b and one of 201 b have been caught. BEAUTY OF CANDLE LIGHT. Many home-makers have re discovered the beauties of candlfes and candle-light, and thousand of New Zealand homes are now illuminated by the soft light of “Golden Ray” Candles. “Golden Rays” are made in the Dominion, give a better light, and cost less than imported lines. They are specially hardened, therefore last longer than other brands. If your grocer does not stock, write for supplies direct to Ellis and Manton, Ltd., Manufacturers, G.P.0., Box 222, Wellington.*'
