Just on three inclies of rain has fallen during the 24 hours ending 2 p.m. to-day. A motor car which essayed a- trip to Thames this morning was forced to return as, at a point about, four miles beyond Hikutaia, water from the hills was rushing across the road to a depth of about two feet. The river is rising rapidly, and a? 1 p.m, to-day the gauge on the Te Aroha Road bridge recorded 17ft. The rate of rise has been about 18in. an hour all this morning. Owing to the failure of the electric light the meeting of the Borougli Council last evening was conducted by candle light. “Just like an Irish wake,” was the comment of a latecomer. When, at 11.10 o'clock, the light appe.ared f the candles were ex tinguished with much ceremony. At lasi night’s meeting of the Borough Council ten building permits were dealt with. Of this number three were for new dwellings, two for motoi garages, one for ie-erectii>g a house removed from Karangahako, one for additions to house,, one tor alterations to shops in the main street., one for renovations, and th 3 other for erecting a sign. The annual nieetihg of householders and eleclion of committee will be held on Monday, April 30, at 7.30 p.m. in the Soldiers’ Club. Nominations for the committee close with the secretary on 23rd instant. It is hoped that the Soldiers’ Club will be we’l filled by householders on the 30Q1 instant . The committee has had a very successful year, and many large improvements have been effected in the school grounds and surroundings. Parents and others interested are requested to visit the school grounds, and thus see for (hemselves the work t.hat lias been done by the outgoing committee.
