CATTLE TICK.
REASSURING REPORT. At a meeting of dairy farmers held in Hamilton early in March a resolution was passed urging the N.Z. Cooperative Dairy Co., Ltd., to approach the Stock Department of the Department of Agriculture in connection with the spread of cattle tick in the Waikato area. The Minister of Agriculture was communicated with, and the company has now received the following letter from the Minister: — “I beg to inform you that, the departmental officers are keeping constant watch for tick, while the regulations provide that owners must immediately advise the Department when ticks are discovered on their properties. It is true that ticks have been noticed for the first time on several farms in area “ B,” which includes the Waikato, this season, but this was to be expected, and does not necessarily constitute cause for alarm. Directions were issued that all farms on which ticks have been discovered were to be kept under strict supervision. This has been done, and the inspectors’ reports, indicate that no further ticks have been found other than those reported in the first instance. Another reasurring feature is that oh a particular farm in Awhitu Central, where ticks were to be seen in considerable numbers three, years ago, the spraying which has been carried out at regular intervals during the tick season has proy; ed highly successful in the control of. the pest, this season only four ticks, I haying been pbserved.”
