TARANAKI FRESIANS.
GOING TO SYDNEY. TO COMPETE AT ROYAL SHOW. Messrs G. A. Marchant, and Sons, of Cardiff, who have proved themselves to be amongst the leading and most enterprising breeders of Friesian cattle in the Dominion, have decided to be represented at the forthcoming Sydney Royal Show,, to be held at Easter, and they are shipping two fine females bred in their herd to Sydney this week. At this show a consignment sale of Friesian cattle is to be held in which are to figure a shipment of eighteen from America from three of the most famous herds in that country. However, in view of the high reputation of the Coldstream herd, both in the show ring and under. testing condi- 1 tions, it will be expected that the Taranaki bred cattle will make an excellent showing. During recent years New Zealand bred Friesians have done particularly well in Australia, and it is interesting to note that now direct importations have been made from America, New Zealand bred cattle will meet these in competition both in the show and sale rings. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co.’s stud stock department has undertaken the handling and consignment of these cattle. In the open class for cows in milk the Taranaki breeders will be represented by the four-year-old cow,, Coldstream Johanna Victoria. This fine cow will be due to calve a few days before the show, and should she stand the voyage well will be bound to make a good bid for leading honours, as she carries a superb vessel when in form. Following on the show she is to be sold, as stated, and as her breeding is very fashionable she should appeal to Australian breeders. Her sire was also bred at Coldstream, and is by the famous bull King of the Black and Whites. , The dam of this bull is champion over all breeds in New Zealand in the senior threc-year-old class. She produced 863.511 b of butter-fat at that, age, and her average test was 4.6. His grand-dam was the famous State farm cow Dbmino 111., 7871 b of fat, and his grandsire that wonderful Taranaki notability, Sir de Koi Inka Pietertje, whose descendants have made more 9001 b butter-fat records than the cows of all other breeds combined. Coming to the dam, she is a line bred descendant (a double grandmother of the imported sire Colantha Pietertje Count de Koi). This bull can claim to be bred from two of the best known animals in America, one being by a son of a world’s champion cow in Colantha IV’s Johanna, 9981 b of butterfat, while both his sire and grandsire have each left in America more than 100 high record daughters apiece.
It will be remembered that the champion butter-fat cow of the world (the Taranaki-owned Friesian Alcartra Colthilde Pietje, 11451 b of but-ter-fat) recently produced twin heifer calves. These were sired by the leading herd sire in Messrs Marchant's herd, Coldstream Pontiac. Paul Coldstream Johanna Victoria is also in calf tp this bull. His dam produced recently 8311 b of butter-fat, with an average test of four per cent, of but-ter-fat, and her dam produced 9391 b of butter-fat, and was also a high tester. This is a most valuable trait, in dairy cattle of any breed. The second representative of the Coldstream Stud going to Sydney is the two-year-old heifer Coldstream Princess Nazli, This is a beauty, and although she will be at a disadvantage in age she will be hard to beat. Instead of meeting two-year-olds she will have to compete against three-year-olds, Coldstream Princess Nazli is sired by Woodcrest Netherland Prince, which is the sire of the two-year-old heifer Coldstream Pontiac Wayne. This splendid heifer won first prize in her class at, Stratford shortly after completing a great record as a two-year-old. She produced at that age 7141 b of butter-fat, and nearly 2000 gallons of milk, her average test being three per cent. This heifer shows the value of breeding, as she is descended from the famous animals Netherland Princess IV, 8051 b of butter-fat as a senior two-year-old, and Woodcrest Pietje Pontiac, three of whose averaged more than 9001 b of butter-fat under test. The dam of Coldstream Princess Nazli was sired by that great show bull King Fayne Stegis 11., imp., who has left also many great producers.
Additional interest is given to this two-year-old heifer by reason of the fact that she is in calf to the record priced bull King Alcarthra Pietertje, for which the Taranaki breeders paid 650 guineas as a calf. This bull was the first prize yearling at the Stratford show,, and his dam is the great show and champion producing cow Alcarthra Clothilde Pieteje, previously referred to.
