HIKUTAIA.
WEST SCHOOL PICNIC. The Hikutaia West School held their annual picnic last Friday, making use of their own playground and Mr J. Thomas’ property alongside which he has always placed at the children’s disposal. About H o’clock the school playground appeared quite refreshing with the cheeriness of the little ones running around. The settlers, their wives and children, from the Kalmanawa district, and a good gathering from Nethertpn side, turned up in full force, and all pulling together the little picnic went along beautifully. The catering was supplied by the settlers, and under the management of Mesdames Smith, Thomas, Hogden, and Spencer, with other ladies assisting, the children and everybody else were well provided for. After luncheon the children’s races started, and with Mr J. Thomas in charge, assisted by Mr W. K. Morrison and Si Smith as judges, and C. J. Vedder and S. Smith, junr., as handicappers, the racing showed that these men were rightly placed. The schoolmistress, Miss Smith, showed good judgment, in selecting the prizes for all events.
