BOWLING.
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS; On Saturday last the local bowling green was the centre of interest from 9 o’clock in the morning, the 'Occasion being the bowling tournament conducted by the Goldfields Associatoin. and known as the of Champions” competition. Those taking part in this competition were the winners of the singles championship in their respective clubs. Last years champion was Mr F. Wells, of the Paeroa club, but he was beaten this year by Mr Pinder. As might have been expected, some particularly skilful bowling was witnessed, which frequently evoked well-merited applause from the spectators. The following clubs were represented: Te Aroha, Clothier ; Waikino, Pivac ; Thames, Orbell; Waihi, Senior ; Paeroa, Pinder ; Morrinsville, Abercrombie: Matamata, Stewart. After some close contests Mr Stewart was declared the winner for the 1922-23 season, having won every game in the competition. Mr Stewart played consistently good bowls throughout the day, and heartily deserved his win. .
Following, are the details of the scores in each round: — First Round.—Orbell 17 v. Senior 19 ; Pavlac 13, v. Clothier 23; Pinder 23 v. Abercrombie 12 ; Stewart a bye. Second Round.—Stewart 19 v. Senior 9 ; Clothier 17, v. Orbell 20; Pavlac 15 v. Pinder 23; Abercrombie a bye. Third Round—Pavlac 10 v. Orbell 15 ; Clothier 12 v. Senior 17 ; Abercrombie 3 v Stewart 14. Pinder a bye. Fourth Round.—Orbell 17 v. Abercrombie 10 ; Clothier 11 v. Pinder 19 ; Pivac 8 v. Stewart 16 ; Senior a bye. Fifth Round.—Clothier 19 v. Abercrombie 4 ; Pivac 6 v. Senior 15 ; Pinder 10 v. Stewart 15 ; Orbell a. bye. Sixth Rbund.—Senior 12 v. Abercrombie 11; Orbell 5 v. Pinder 18 , Clothier 8 v. Stewart 18 ; Pivac a bye. Seventh Round.—Abercrombie 19 v. Pivac 4 ; Pinder 14 v. Senior 7 ; Stewart 16 v. Orbell 15 ; Clothier a bye. The total wins for each club were : Matamata. 5, Paeroa 4, Thames 4, Waihi 4, Morrinsville 2 Te Aroha 1, Waikmp 0, At the conclusion of the play Paet roa’s president (Mr F. Wells) congratulated Mr Stewart on attaining the proud position of champion of champions in the Goldfields district, and on behalf of the association handed him a trophy, valued at £4 4s. Mr Wells said he trusted the winner would not rest, on his laurels, but aspire to even greater things. Mr Stewart briefly replied, thanking the bowlers for their congratulatory remarks, as • expressed by Mr W?lls. Mr Stewart said he would indeed value the handsome trophy which would serve to remind him ’f the many hard-fought, games he had played that day, and of’ the true sportsmen he had met. He wished to specially thank the Paeroa club, on behalf of the visitors, for the kindness and hospitality extended to them, and he assured them that he was looking forward to meeting them all again next year at Matamata.
