HERD-TESTING.
ADVOCATED BY N.Z. DAIRY CO. HIGHER STANDARD WANTED. A strong request that herd testing should be undertaken by all suppliers in an effort to improve the productive capacity of their cows and so add to their own individual prosperity and that of the community was made to a meeting of suppliers, held yesterday, under the auspices of the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd. Mr A. J. Heighway, on behalf of the management, outlined the steps that were being taken by the directors in 'order to give suppliers facilities for testing. In, addition, information bearing upon the ■ formation of herdtesting associations was given. K, was stated that out of over 250,000 cowsjbeld by the company’s suppliers only 19,000. were at present being tested, and it was hoped that a considerable expansion would take.plae? next year. The company’s tes/ting officer, Mr G. H. Oldham, pared to give every assistance and advice in connection with testing, and it was urged- that suppliers should now prepare to undertake testing work next year. Mr A. E. Missen, outside organiser of the company., and well known in Jersey circles, also spoke strongly .of the need for more testing being undertaken in order to improve the butter-fat standard of the country. Feed, weed, and breed should be every dairy farmer’s slogan, and by this means he would improve his own position and that of (the country generally. It was resolved by the meeting to bring, under the notibe of suppliers the advantage of herd-testing.
