DISTRICT NEWS.
PIPIROA. A DANCE. The first of the .regular winter dances was held on Thursday last, and proved a great success. The hall was crowded, dancers coming from Turua, Kopuarahi, Ngatea, and Waitakaruru. The music was supplied by Henderson’s orchestra. * PRESENTATION. Mr J. E. Kelly,, who is leaving Pipiroa, was, at a dance held recently, presented by Mr E. Keane, oh behalf of the settlers of the district with a case of silver-mounted pipes and a gold-mounted cigarette holder. Both were inscribed, conveying the esteem in which Mr Kelly is held in the district. Miss Kelly, was presented with a handsome cult class scent bottle.
TURUA.
CHURCH DANCE. The first of the monthly da,nces arranged by the ladies of the Turua Anglican Church was held on Thursday last. About 4'o couples were present and an enjoyable evening was spent. VETERINARY CLUB. There was only a small attendance of members at the. last meeting of the Hauraki Plains Veterinary Club held recently to discuss whether the club would carry on. The matter was Jeft in the hands of a committee of seven to investigate and report fo a general meeting later. A letter from the Farmers’ Veterinary Club, Ngatea, suggesting an amalgamation of the two clubs was read but the feeling' was that this would create too large an area.
MANGAWHERO.
OPENING OF TENNIS CLUB. A very successful function took place in the Manga.wherp district on Thursday last, on the occasi&n of the official opening of the newly-formed tennis club. The weather conditions were perfect, and the numerous guests, many of whom came considerable distances to attend, presented an ' animated and .picturesque scene, to which the gay dresses of the ladies contributed in no small way.. Great credit is due to the residents for the enthusiasm shown and the manner in which they have all wp.rked with a will to make the club a success; During the afternoon many, keen and closely contested sets were played on the two cour.ts. Quite a number of the players showed great promise, and there is no doubt that Mangawhero Club will give a good account of itself in the near future. 3 Ample refreshments were kindly provided* by the local,ladies to which the guests did full -justice. The club was officially opened ,by Mr McDonald, the president, who, in an appropriate speech, voiced friendlv sentiments to the neighbouring clubs. On behalf of the guests Mr F. Mayne suitably replied, and congratulated the club on the results achieved and the excellent state of the courts.
PATETONGA. entertainment and dance. ’ To raise funds to meet the year’s instalment on the Patetonga Hall an entertainment arid dance was held on Thursday night. After a splendid picture programme had been screened songs were contributed by Mrs HagueSmith and Mrs Budd, of Paeroa, and Mr N. Wallace, of Patetonga. Dancing was then engaged in till an early hour. The music was; supplied by Mrs Hodder and Miss Caldwell, and Mr H. Mawkes was M.C.. As a. result the funds were benefited to the extent of £2O, and the balance was made up by subscription.
