DEATH OF SIR W. HERRIES
A POPULAR MINISTER. WELLINGTON, February 22. Sir William Herries, M.P. for Tauranga, died in hosjjjtal this morning. Sir William Herries, who was- a member of the Executive Council and Minister with portfolio in the last Cabinet, was born in London on April 19, 1859, the so-n of H. C. Herries, bar-rister-at-law, and Leonora Emma, daughter of H. Wickham. He married in 1889 Catherine Louisa, daughter of Mr E. F. Roche,, late of Johnstown, Ireland, and Shaftesbury, New Zealand, and his wife pre-deceased him in 1912. The late Sir William was educated at Eton, and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating as 8.. A He left England for New Zealand in 1881 and took up farming near Te Aroha. He entered Parliament as, member for Bay of Plenty, and afterwards for the Tauranga electorate. He was appointed Minister of Railways and Native Affairs in 1912. and I‘eld these portfolios until the 1919 Parliament. For a term he also,held the portfolio of Minister of Labour. After the 1921 Parliament Sir William had to seek treatment in a private hospital, and subsequently took a trip Home, returning last year. Recently he had a recurrence of his former trouble, and. again went into a private hospital. Though able to take his seat ar the recent short, session, he was unable to see the sitting out. At the last election, on December 7, Si.’- William Herries was returned with a vote of 4322 against Mr L. Johnston (Liberal-Labour), 2395.
