DISTRICT NEWS.

NG ATE A. THE HIGH SCHOOL. ‘ The advisory inspector to the Auckland Education Board, Mr D. W. Dunlop, and Mr A. Burns, a member of the Board, visited Ngatea on Friday last and expressed the opinion that, a high school was warranted. The position was much better than : t appeared on paper in Auckland, but an effort will have, to be made to increase'the number of pupils. Considerable difficulties in connection with the establishment of th*, high school are being overcome. Mr W. White will convey the Turua pupils to and from school free of charge, and Mr H. P. Whittaker will bring the Wai.takairuru pupils for a small charge. The Education Board has been asked to defray part of this cost. Suitable board and lodgings has been arranged in Ngatea for pupils. At present classes are being held in the hall, but the plans for the additions to the school have been approved, and tenders will shortly bo called. TENNIS ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the Hauraki ■ Plains Tennis Association was held at Ngatea on Tuesday. There was a full attendance of delegates, and Mr W. G. Hayward occupied the chair. The secretary read the results of the first round. In the KopuarahiKerepeehi B grade match only 11 games were played instead of 13. Mr Devereaux (Kerepeehi) said that one of the lady players of his club was ill, and l could not attend. A set of men’s doubles was to be played, but the Kopuarahi team decided not to play this set as it would be better to have ,an odd number of games. Mr Briggs (Kopuarahi) said that the Kopuarahi players thought that they should play according to the list that had been drawn, up. The Kopuarahi team was on the ground at 11.30 a.m., and tihe match should have been finished in time for, them to get home to milk. Some of the Kerepeehi players did not arrive until 2 p.m. It was unfortunate that there had been a misunderstanding, but neither team was fully aware of the rules. He suggested that Kerepeehi sh6uld claim 9 points for the men’s doubles and Kopuarahi claim 7 points for the ladies’ doubles. Mr Devereaux moved “that these two sets be played, or that thle who'e match be replayed,’’ but the motion lapsed for want of a seconder. After more discussion it was decided. on the motion of Mr Stretton, seconded by Mr McMillan, that Kerepeehi lose the ladies’ doubles by default and Kopuarahi lose the men's double's by default. This would not affect the win for Kopuarahi. Mr Devereaux voted against the motion. I ft was decided that each club playing a match should supply two pairs of new balls. Levy for Refreshments. —On the motion of Mr Briggs, seconded by Mr Stretton, it was decided that, the AGs levy on the visiting team for refreshments should be abolished. Delegates were of the opinion that visiting teams had enough expense to meet in travelling ’expenses. Williams Memorial Shield Matches. —After a little discussion it was decided that this question be deferred till a Kopu delegate was present. Combined Doubles.—lt was pointed out that' in the recent competitions some clubs played “7 up” in the combined sets, whereas the rules stipulated “9 up.” Although it was stated that it was hard to play the maten within the day no alteration was made. The draw for next Saturday's matches resulted/ A Grade.—Kaihere plays Waitakaruru, at Kaihere; Turua plays Kopu, at Turua. B Grade. —Ngatea plays Kopuarahi, at Kopuarahi: Turua plays Waitakaruru, at Waitakaruru. The Finals.—Mr Devereaux moved that as the final match for the Laidlaw Cup would be very close it. would have to be played at a place where th'ere were two courts, and that, as a neutral ground was preferable, fhe match should be played at Kerepeehi. The motion whs seconded by Mr Hayward and carried. It was decided that the Kerepeehi club supply the refreshments and make a charge for admission .to the courts to cover the cost. On the motion of Mr McMillan it was decided that the' president, the Secretary, and Mr Devereaux be a committee" to arrange the finals of the B grade matches. The matter of Association courts was introduced by the secretary, but nothing definite was decided upon.

KOPUARAHI.

■ NEW SCHOOL SUGGESTED. Messrs Burns and Dunlop,' of tne Auckland Education Board, who visited the Plains on 1 Friday last, inspected the Kopuarahi school. They spoke of a new building on thle same site at. Kopuarahi, and a shelter-shed scho d at Orongo. Whether any action will be taken is not known, but a new building at Kopuarahi is wry necessary, as the present building is accommodating 70 pupils on a floor space for 47. The building lhas a very low ceiling,' and l on hot days becomes exceedingly stuffy. This fact is recognised by the Board, which, has granted permission for the school to be closed in the afternoon during the month of February. There are. about 25 pupils available if a school should be built at Orongo-
