CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

GENERAL MEETING. The Paeroa. Chamber of Commerce met last evening. Present: Messrs E. W. Porritt (president), J. T. Brown, W. J. Enticott, E. Porritt, 1). Leach, G. H. Taylor, and J. Couper. karangahake MINES. The Mines Department declined to make a grant towards the construction of a public battery at Karangawas decided to forward a- copy oiO the letter to the delegates from Karangahake who attended a previous meeting, and again to urge the Department to consider .the request. Mr Leach said a battery was required that could treat all the ores that came in at any time.* At the present time hundreds of fbns of ore were hung up at Karangahake because they could not use the pirvate. companies’ batteries there. The president said the prospects at Karangahake pt the present’time for small parties appeared to be verygood. The department’s reply was not satisfactory. The Karahgahakie prospectors could be asked for suggestions, and these could be forwarded to the department with the Chamber support. This suggestion was adopted. TELEPHONE CHARGES. •„The proposed new telephone charges were discussed, seven members stating that if the service was efficient the extra charges would not be so objectionable. The president said that at the present time the system dearly “drove one ctotty.” The charges were approved, provided the change, will result in increased efficiency and more satisfactory service. Mr Brown : If that appears in the paper to-morrow you will get no rings for a fortnight. ANOTHER POLICEMAN. It was decided- to urge the Minister of Justice to appoint another policeman for Paei'pa, the district being far too large for one man. THE RIVERS ACT. On the motion of, Mr Leach it was decided to urge the Minister of Public Works to take steps during the coming session to amend the Waihpu and Ohinemuri Rivers Act so as so enable him to relieve the settlers within the Pereniki ponding artea in the manner already reported on and considered by the Public Works Department.
