THE SHOW: The Hauraki Plains Agricultural and Past-oral Society’s third annual show, held at Ngatea yesterday, was a pronounced success. ■ No more favourable weather'could have been had for the occasion, for though it was a typical summer day, a cooling breeze prevailed. Conditions were, in fact, ideal, and as a result every road to the show ground became busy thoroughfares from an early hour. Waggons, traps, lorries,, motor cars ami “ tin lizzies ” journeyed from neatami far, and their passengers forget, to worry about the roads —as they are or might be. Every line of communication leading to Ngatea became alive with people. The Plains temporarily trebled its population. It. was a “ day out ” for townsmen and farmers. The farmer came to see what his neighbour was doing and the townsman to see more of the source from where he really derives his prosperity. When, therfore," the last of the travellers had arrived at the Ngatea show ground the dimensions of tiie crowd became evident. 4t was difficult to estimate the number present, though it was generally considered that the attendance was on a par with that at the previous sihojv. THE CATTLE. Judging commenced early in the day, and the results were followed with interest. The cattle entered varied somewhat in quality, and little difficulty was experienced in picking out the champions, though the firsts and seconds in a few classes did not. greatly differ in merit. The Jerseys’ were a better lot than at the previous show, but there were fewer entries. In the 3-year-old bull class the winner was an excellent example of a godd, useful animal. The chanipion cow. (Mr W. J. Hall’s) had already won the championship at Paeroa and Te Aroha, having five silver cups to its credit, while the seconds prize cow had secured similar wins at Hamilton, Paeroa, and Te Aroha. It. was therefore obvious that such animals would not be rivalled. In the Friesians; the entries were bigger than usual, while they were an allround better lot than those seen at thq former show. The female stock in both Jerseys and Friesians was very creditable. There was', however, ample evidence at the show to indicate that more attention will need to be given to the improvement of dairy herds. Of course, a. great mnay farmers had not. troubled to send in entries, hence the animals penned could not be taken as representative of all the herds' bn the Plains.

HORSES. In the horse class some useful hacks and draughts were to be seen, these generally being well up to average standard. It may be mentionel that tlie judging in every case appeared to give the utmost satisfaction. COMPETITIONS. In the competitions, which claimed attention during the afternoon, some excellent “turn-outs” were seen. The jumping events, however, were the prior attraction, the amusing failures of some of the competitors supplying a vein o r levity that, made a strong appeal tc the crowd. The fact was that most of the horses absolutely declined tc face the hurdles, while many of the riders, though appearing to induce their mounts to take the jumps, also seemed to be trusting that the horses would walk around them. OTHER ATTRACTIONS. Various side-shows’, etc., as well as every opportunity to picnic, were enjoyed by the crowd, and all who attended appeared to spend an exceedingly enjoyable day. In many wavs the day was also instructive, as many of the visitors were previously unaware that the dairying industry was in such a thriving state on the Plains. To others, who make just occasional visits to Ngatea, the progress of that township was somewhat marvelled at. The fact that many •really up-to-date shops had made their appearance there during the last ifew months—-shops that would be a

credit to any town in the Thames Valley—was the subject of mucih comment on the -showground. The show as’ a whole was an undoubted success, reflecting credit on the society and all. its officials.
