PURE-BRED CATTLE.

JERSEY BREEDERSf ACTION. AN ENTERPRISING MOVE. For some time past the Jersey breeders of the Hauraki Plains have been considering the best method by which their herds could be improved. A sequel to this consideration ,tpok place at Friday’s meeting of the Thames Valley Jersey Breeders’ Club, when Mr Crinimin's' moved that the members club together and take step's to procure a really good bull from Jersey Island. The chairman said he did not see why the Thames Valley should not become the most important centre for Jersey cattle in New Zealand. Mr Buchanan : It will be. The chairman suggested that die fullest details should be obtained, not only from Jersey, but from America and Canada. If the prices were too high they might find an animal in New Zealand to suit them. Mr Buchanan said that if Mr Crimmins would alter his motion to read as follows he would second it: “That steps be taken tp ascertain the price at which a top-notch Jersey bull can be imported for the use bf the Thames Valley breeders.’’ Mr Crimmins agreed to the suggested alteration. The Chairman: What we want to get is the very best animal it is possible to procure. We want the butter produced. Mr Buchanan : Yes, that’s so. The Chairman : We should see that we get an animal with the highest possible butter fat capacity. My idea, he said, is that Jersey Island is absolutely the fountain-head. If you get them from Jersey there is n.o chance Of their being mixed up with anything else. Mr Buchanan said they should buy on absolute butter-fat records. It was suggested that, if an expert happened to be going Home they might get him to visit Jersey Island and procure what they wanted. Mr Morrison said he thought they might get something good in New Zealand. During a discussion as to lipw the bull would be maintained, etc., it was suggested that fees could be paid, and that these would be refunded pro rata according to what members' had The following motion, moved by Mr Crimmins and seconded by Mr Buchanan, was carried’: “That this clun make inquiries from Jersey Island with a view to importing a Jersey bull of outstanding merit for the use of members who are subscribers to the club.”

On the suggestion of Mr Buchanan the ■secretary was instructed to obtain photos’ of the animals, their dams and grand-dams, and to advise that butter-fat records be the predominating feature.
