TENNIS.

LAIDLAW CUP COMPETITIONS. The first round in the Laidlaw Cup competitions was played on Saturday. Six clubs were competing for this trophy, which was presented by Mr R. Laidlaw, of the Farmers’ Union Trading ■ Co. for competition among tennis dubs oni the Hauraki Plains. The value of such trophies is demonstrated by the keenness displayed the standard of tennis produced, and the sportsmanship shown. WAITAKARURU V. KEREPEEHI. Although Kerepeehi had put forth their strongest team, they were outclassed ‘by Waitakaruru and beaten by 42. The standard of the tennis was i very high, and on Saturday s play it looks as though Waitakaruru will stand a good chance of winning the cup. , Following are the results, Waitakaruru being . mentioned first: Men s Singles’: G. L. Griffith beat Devereaux, 9_5 ; smeeton beat C. Hudson, 9 0 ■ c. Stretton beat Loudon, 9 8 , A. Otter beat Frecklingtbn, 9—7. Men’s Doubles: Griffith and Smeeton beat Devereaux and Hudson, 9—2 ; Otter and Stretton beat Loudon and Frecklington, 9—l; Hedges and McClune beat Dent and Potter. 9—B. Ladies’ Singles: Mrs Smeeton beat Mrs Fawcett, 7—5 ; Miss C. Faherty beat Mrs Hutchinson, 7—5. Ladies Doubles: Mrs Smeeton and Miss Faheitv beat Mrs Fawcett and Mrs Hutchinson, 7-2; Mrs Fraser and Miss G. Coxhead beat Mrs Potter and Miss . Nicholson, 7 —4. Combined Doubles: Mrs Fraser and S. McClane lost to Mrs Potter and V. Dent, 6— ; Miss G. Coxhead and N. Hedges lost to Miss Nicholson and J. Potter, 6 -7. Totals : Waitakaruru 103, Kerepeehi 61. Owing to the approach of darkness the two combined doubles were played “7 up” instead of “9 up.” TURUA V. HOPAI. Owing to the unavoidable absence of several of their best players Hopai could not put forth a strong team and were easily beaten by Turua. The Hopai court was fully exposed to the wind, which blew in Strong gusts and affected the play. Following are the results, Turua being mentioned first.: — Men’s Singles : J. L. Brownlee beat E. Ladies Doubles : Miss Gibbs and Miss Darby beat Mrs Motion and Mrs Vowles, 7— ; Mrs McMillan and Mrs Scott beat ’ Mrs Wad,e and Miss Appleby, 7 o. HAYWARD SHIELD MATCHES. The B grade matches for the first round of the Hayward Shield were played on Saturday under exactly the same conditions as the Laidlaw Cup. Seven clubs entered teams, but the Hopai club was unable to get a team and forfeited the match to Waitakaruru. The weather was ideal, and some very good tennis was witnessed.
