TURUA ROAD WORKS
QUESTION OF SUPERVISION. DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL. Y deputation consisting of Messrs P. H. Henry, D. G. McMillan, and W. Madgwick, representing the Southern area of the Turua riding waited upon the Hauraki Plains County Council on Monday. Mr McMjllan said they had visited Puriri and inspected metal there, and found ic was suitable for their scheme. He also asked that a supervisor be appointed to overlook the scheme, and suggested Mr R. Cameron, of Taranaki, at a salary of £350 per annum, to work as foreman of works under the supervision of the county engineer. The deputation asked if the Council would authorise the riding members 1 to deal with any' small matters in conjunction with the engineer and the advisory committee of the area without having to wait for a meeting of the Council. Cr. Hayward said it would perhaps be better to wait till next spring before appointing a man, as. it might not be possible to have work done during the winter. ■ Mr Madgwick said there was nothing ,t.o stop a lot of work being done this winter. Cr. Harris said he was not against a further appointment if it was in the interests of the county, but he was against any expenditure if it could be avoided. If the engineer said it was necessary to have a supervisor he would support the motion. The chairman, in reply 'to a question by Cr. Hayward, said, the supervisor’s wages would come out of the loan. Cr. Hayward said the ratepayers had authorised a loan, including the cost of supervision, so only the ratepayers could say anything against it if the man was not suitable. Crs. kfayn, Parfitt, and McLoughlin supported the idea of having an expert always on the job if the Council was quite satisfied that he was a good man. The engineer could only give a limited amount of time to the scheme. Mr McMillan said he. thought a great deal of work could he done during the winter.' At this point: the Council went into committee. When the deputation withdrew and standing orders were resumed Cr. Parfitt moved that the engineer be authorised ip apnoint a foreman of works for the Turua-Netherton road loan.
