HTKUTAIA MEETING.

A LARGE CROWD. Officials. Patrons: Mrs J. Corbett and Hon. A: M l . Myers. Judges: Messrs A. Alley and G. A. Collins. Handicappers : Messrs Chas. Morison and C. L. Hardy. Timekeeper: Mr S. Heslo'p. Ellis, Chairman, and Secretary. Chairman of Committee: Mr Alf. Alley, Hon. Secretary: Mr I. M. Robinson. Had it been possible to control the weather no more ideal conditions could have been experienced than those that prevailed on Monday. As soon, therefore, as it became apparent .that the day was going to be suitable ifpr a day’s outing people from all parts of the district set out fort the Hiktuaia Athletic Sports Club’s meeting, trains, traps, and motors depositing full loads at the grounds. Though .the sports were to commence at 11 o’clock, a large crowd had assembled on the grounds before that hour, and after the two express trains passed througji the crowd grew rapidly. At noon it was estimated that fully 2000 people were present. As on previous occasions, the officials of the club had carefully studied the interests of patrons, with the result that the day s

outing was an unqualified success — prpbably a greater success than any o( its predecessors. The ground, kindly lent for the occasion by. Mrs Corbett, was in splendid order, both for sports and picnicking. Picnickers were, in fact, largely in evidence. The sports, passed off without the slightest hitch, while the results were recorded in a manner which gave every satisfaction to competitors and spectators alike. In short, it is doubtful if the meeting could have been better conducted. The presence of the Hauraki Regimental Band, from Thames, greatly added to the pleasure of all present. The band played almost continuously throughout the meeting, so that every moment held something of interest for everyone. The club, besides being gratified with the success of the meeting, has every reason to be assured that their efforts resulted in the sports being a pronounced success. By reason of the weather, and the singularly happy way the meeting was conducted, this sports gathering will long be remembered as one o f the most successful ever held in the district. The wood-chopping events naturally proved the most attractive on the programme, and were followed by man, woman, and child with the keenest. enthusiasm. Immediately a chopping event was announced all else was forgotten, the enormous ring of spectators that surrounded the competitors forming an unusual spectacle in itself. From the maiden handicap chop, which witnessed an extremely keen contest for supremacy, and which was won in quick time, interest in the chopping events never flagged. Clean ■sport was the keynote of the meeting. RESULTS OF EVENTS. Running. Boys' race, under 16.—R. Watson 1, Whitten and McKay 2. 100yds Maiden Handicap.—W. A. Thompson 1, D. Smith 2, W. Smith' 3.
