Clare, Ngatea, wrote giving a quotation of £5OO for surfacemen’s cottages according to the Council s plans and specifications. He suggested that an improvement would be tc. have corrugated iron instead of wood for the outer walls, and to do away with the Ihotwatelr service and substitute a washhouse and a copper. This would bring the cost to £528 13 s 91 Cr. Hayward thought these were good suggestion’s. Iron would he more durable .than wood, painting would mot cost as much, there would be less expense on maintenance, and the insurance might be less. Ctr. Harris agreed, and stateci that be considered a washhouse and copper more necessary than a hot water service. A range with a water; boiler attached could be installed. Mr E. E. Gillman, of Paeroa, wrote stating that, as he had previously prepared plans and specification's 1 for surfacemen’s cottages 'for -the Council, and that these had not been used owing to the high cost of materials at t'he time, he should now receive consideration. He also pointed out the, necessity of. having an architect to protect the council. Members were of the opinion that they were under, no obligation to Mr Gillman, and that they should consider Mr Claire’s offer. Or. Harris suggested that, as the engineer was capable he should supervise the construction" and .thereby save the council paying architect’s fees. Cr. Chatfield supported this, and said that as the surfacemen would have to pay rent the cost should be as little as possible. A cottage would be needed in each riding. Tn reply to a question, the clerk stated that, the Council was in a fit financial position to go on with the work. Cr. Hayward suggested that all timber exposed to the weather should be heairt of totara instead of red pine. Cr. Parfitt moved that the matter of plans and specifications for workmen’s cottages be left to the engineer. Cr. Harris moved that as' soon as the. engineer has the plans he should be' authorised to call tenders for a 'surfaceman's house at WaitakaruruThe motion was seconded by Cr. Parfitt and carired.

A PIG DEPOT. The Assistant Traffic Inspector, Frankton Junction, wirote stating that he would like to meet the epun*cil in connection with the suggested pig depot, at. Kopu railway station, and inquired for a suitable date. '• The clerk pointed out .that he had offered to give information as* to the number of pigs. He wished to know if that information was available. On. Parfitt said that only a rough estimate could be made,, bu,t if each factory supplier was credited with 30 pigs a fair average would be arrived at Cr. McLoughlin expressed the opinion that as it was not a big thing the Railway Department was asked for they would be reimbursed by freightsOn ,the motion of Cr. Chatfield, seconded by Cr. McLoughlin, it was decided that the clerk and Cr. Hayward be appointed to meet the inspector. PAEROA METAL DUMB. The District Engineer of the Railway Department, Paeroa, wrote stating that the lease of the metal dump on the railway property would expire shortly, and inquired the council’s intentions. The engineer stated that there was approximately 1000 yards of metal at the dump, and that he proposed using 500 yards shortly. The engineer was authorised to apply for a renewal of the lease. PERMANENT ROADS. Messrs W. E. G. Willy and Al. H. Rogers, of the Horahia riding, wrote asking the Council, at, the earliest possible date, to submit to the riding ratepayers estimates of; the cost of constructing permanent roads in the riding. “We suggest such a scheme

should include the Kerepeehi—-Kopua-rahi road f.rom south boundary to north boundary of riding. the Orchard East road from Turua Estate boundary to .the Ngatea bridge ; Horahia Road from Wharf to junction witn KeFepeehi-Kopuarahi Road ; the Tu-rua-Kopuarahi Road from its junction with the Kerepeehi'-Kopuarahi Road to boundary of Turua Town Board area. The above-named roads are for the most part in'fair condition now, and we feel that i.t would be a shortsighted policy to allow them tp get into a bad condition before any scheme was brought forward for their permanent construction, as it is essential -to keep the water off such roads in order to maintain them in an efficient condition. We suggest .that your council should submit, such

j a scheme if possible, sb that a poll i can be taken at a date not later than I April 2S next.” I Cr. Harris’ moved taht the engineer, I be instructed to report on Horahia j roads at the next, meeting. I in seconding the motion Cr. Hayward said that there was no doubt that the roads were in a good condition, and that the council should get some scheme of permanent reading. | Chatfield said he would like to | see estimates for the Kerepeehi road | from the Turua corner to the Kerej peehi wharf. I The motion was carried.
