RACIAL CHARACTERISTIC

ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS. THEIR INFLUENCE. That a connection may be traced between atmospheric conditions and racial characteristic was suggested in a paper read by Mr Thomas Watson, of Feilding, before the Science Congress.

The atmosphere of the Southern Hemisphere, due to excess ojf ocean over land, has a less proportion of pure, dry air than the Northern Hemisphere, he said, and is in that proportion deficient in oxygen and magnetic properties generally. It. must therefore have a corresponding deficiency in the proportions of iron and magnetic properties generally to the cubic foot o,f. air, and this must be reflected in the physical and mental life of the people. The characteristic physical and mental energy of the American and Canadian people was partly due to the highly oxygenated and magnetic qualities of the North American continent, but in added measure to the influence of the Gulf Stream. The speaker further contended that the races o,f, men are only affected by the influencesVamcd, but that racial types are the result of geological agency rather than climate, mineral emanations producing different physical, and mental attributes according to locality. All tribal, local, or national characteristics are mainly the effect Of earth currents.
