THE WAR MEMORIAL.
QUESTION OF FUNDS. MEETING TO BE CALLED. At Tuesday’s Borough Council meeting Cr. Silcock drew attention to a letter signed “Curious” which had appeared in - the “Gazette, asking what had become of the money collected and what was being done towards providing a suitable war memorial in Paeroa. Cr. Silcock said he was .'one of those asked to canvass for this project, and he had collected, and'had been promised about £7O. He, top, wanted to know what was being done in the matter, and suggested that the Mayor might call a public meeting and see if some enthusiasm ' could not be put into the scheme, ft was a great pity nothing had been done in Paeroa to date. The speaker said a number of people were, not willing .to subscribe to the fund on account of the suggestion tp erect an arch; or gateway at the entrance to the Domain, considering it an unsuitable form of memorial. He thought a more' suitable memorial could be decided upon, and he favoured the idea of building a swimming bath , for the town, which would be a decided acquisition to Paeroa, and one that would be valued and appreciated by everyone. He asked the Mayor to again call a public meeting and lay the suggestion before the people, which might invoke some interest in a memorial scheme. His Worship said he had presided at a pulbic meeting, when, a commit- • tee had been appointed to arrange for the cost and erection of a suitable war memorial, but he 'was unable definitely to state how far the scheme had been carried out. He very much regretted that the public had not seen fit to subscribe more liberally to the fund. The amount repaired for - the original project was approximately £9OO, and of that amount £65 odd had been actually, subscribed and vested in the borough council, and was lying to the credit of the war memorial fund in the district fund account. In addition to the £65 received in cash promises had been given for amounts- totalling about £3OO. He was quite willing .to call a meeting of the public, as suggested by Cr. Silcbck, and would do so at an early date, but he was of the opinion that the public had had ample opportunity to express their views, and raise the necessary money. This matter was really out of the hands of the - Counci?, but he would be only too pleased to do what he could.
