ENTERTAINMENTS.

CENTRAL THEATRE PICTURES. TO-NIGHT’S PICTURES. “THE CUP OF LIFE.” Thomas H. Ince’s special produc- . tipn “The Cup of' Life” will be screened to-night. The plot evolves around a magnificent pearl, smuggled from the Dutch fisheries by Bully Brand, a daring and notorious sea captain. Brand makes it a gift to his son, who in turn presents it to Pain, the adopted white daughter of a powerful Chinese merchant. The Oriental, under the impression that Brand has corrupted his daughter with the gem, ‘ evolves a dreadful revenge, which is prevented only by the courageous action of .the smuggler. Hobart Bosworth, who has for many years been associated with virile, manly rples, and roles that call for that masteuline strength which is a characteristic of him, is seen at his best in this picture.

SATURDAY NIGHT. TWO'-STAR PROGRAMME. Oh Saturday night the programme will include .two “star” pictures, namely, “Man to Man” (a SuperWesfern Jewel) and “Footlights” (a. Universal Jewel production pf unusual merit). “Man to Man,” featuring Harry Carey, is billed as one of . the biggest things in Western thrills ever screened. It is a drama of adventure in the Far West, Whirlwind action, appealing romance, and engrossing suspense will hold you breathless until the end. A terrific climax that will lift you out of your seat! A stupendous picturisatioh of Jackson Gregory’s world-faomus novel. “Footlights” is the other “star” picture, featuring Elsie Ferguson. . THE FAMOUS DIGGERS. NEW REAL GIRL SHOW. PAEROA, TUESDAY, JANUARY 16. Chaperoned under Jimmy Norton,' a clever comedian-producer, well known throughout America as “That London Boy,” The Famous Diggers new real - girl show takes on a distinctiveness that makes it even more attractive than ever. After making a name foR himself in England Mr Norton crossed “the pond” and did a vaudeville act throughout the Keith and Or-, pheum circuits in America, and even-: tually joined Zeigfield’s Follies big roof gauden show in New York. His success was instantaneous 1 , and it was then that people began to talk about him as “That London Boy,” a soubri-. quet which has stuck to hita. He is undoubtedly one of the best com- ■ edians anp eccentric dancers ever I seen in this country. Among the old favourites of The Diggers who still remain with the show are Joe Valb, Gus Dawson,. Tano Fama, and Stan.. Lawson. The ballet and chorus, consisting of “The Superb Six,” a very. beautifu l bevy of real girls, is calculated to set young men dreaming and everyone applauding. Their. dresses should challenge comparison, ■with the best, as an experienced thea-t’ trical modiste was brought over from Melbourne for the purpose of super-/ intending the designing and making of them. Brilliancy is the keynote of; The Diggers’ hew production. The new producer, like his predecessor,' has a penchant for, a quick pro' gramme wherein can be crammed smart items which follow each other - so rapidly that patrons are astonished to find that the programme has taken two and three-quarter hours. Among items are “The Bride’s Trousseau,” a miniature musical comedy,: ‘‘‘The Rest Cure” (the hit of De Cour-, ville’s London revue “Pins and. Needles”), “The Follies’ Fancy DresS; Ball” in the roof garden scene, "Breaking into Gaol,” a real scream,. “The Butterfly Baliet,’’ and .a number, of other items which serve to intro> duce the latest song hits.
