MATCH AGAINST THAMES. RAIN SPOILS PLAY. A combined Paeroa and Waihi elevon visited Thames on New Year’s Day toVmeet the Thames representative eleven, but after the visitors had completed one innings the match had to be abandoned owing to rain. Thames won -the toss and sent the visitors in to bat. Quintal was' soon bowled, but Furley and Henderson put up 51 before Henderson was caught. Shand did not stay long,, and Furley left at 56, having played the ball on to the wickets. Martin and McDade added a few, butAfanning and Farrbw failed. Saunders aAd Towers added 18 together, and eventually the score reached 100. Heavy rain .then set in. Raia fell throughout the innings, and both the bowlers and batsmen ■were ‘ .handicapped by the slippery ball and spongy wicket. Runs were hard to obtain, the balls' coming off .the mattnig at varying paces. The only stand of any length was the' of Henderson and Furley for the second wicket. Dare and Gleeson overcame the difficulties wel,l, and both bowled a good length and sent, down very few lose balls. The following are the scores : PAEROA AND WAIHI. F. KOPUARAHI. EASY WIN FOR KOPUARAHI. A friendly game of cricket between elevens representing Turua and Kopuarahi was played at Kopuarahi on Saturday last, and resulted in an easy win for the home team. A couple of very .heavy showers interrupted the play and made the ground very slippery. Kopuarani batted first, Miller and Harwood opening up to Bell and Johnston, but made a very bad start, being caught by Bennett off Bell; the score standing at one. Sloane came on and knocked up seven'before being bowled by Bell. Death then joined Miller and played fine cricket, though only scoring singles. After •scoring nine singles Miller returned one to Bell, with the score at 20. After Beddie had played a ball on to his wicket without opening his score his place was taken by Briggs, who, while at first slow to take advantage of runs offered, carried his bat and was credited with top score. When Death’s total had just reached two figures Johnston scattered his- bails, the score standing at £7. Gill took his place, but was caught by Bennett before scoring. O’Carroll followed and got-in four runs before being dismissed by .Bell. With eight wickets down tor sixt»Green joined Briggs. He was cautious at first, but later opened out and had knocked up 25 when the inning's was declared. The bowling was, on the w.hple, slow. Belli was in need of practice, though his direction was good. Johnston bowled well, though perhaps a bit snort. Play had already been interrupted by rain,, but at this period a very heavy shower, came down, making the ground behind the wicket so slippery that it. was difficult for the bowlers to take a run. Bennett and Miller opened up... for Turua, but after making six Miller retired, his place being taken py Bathgate Bennett was howled by Death when his total was five. Bell went in next, and shortly afterwards Bathgate was bowls;l by "Beddie. Johnston quickly followed through playing his first ball on to the wickets. With four wickets down for twenty) two Stewart joined Bell, who was neatly caught by Sloane after making a dozen runs. Jones was next in, but was dismissed by Briggs for two. Briggs then despatched the rest of the team for 12 runs, of which Stewart made eight. Kopuarahi trjed many bowlers, all of whom, with .the exception of C. R. Briggs, were greatly handicapped by the mud. Following are the details of the match :
