Paeroa won the toss and 1 Furlpy hinti \ Shand opened to the bowling of- Zenovich and Stump. Play opened quietly, Shand playing a maiden over to Zeno- ; vich. Furley got Stamp to leg for a two and a single, and facing Zepoyich hit (him to leg for a four and aisix? off successive balls - . Shand played, steadily without scoring much, but Furley again put Zenovich to leg .for six. At 32 Shand; was bowled? Martin took his place, but after scoring a jingle was out l.b.w. Towers failed, and with Roltqn in Furley hit Stamp < for six. Rolton left at 46. Wickets then fell fast, and nine wickets 'were down for 51. Tomich, the last man, survived the last'three -balls pf the ■ over, and Furley opened out apd. hit Stanm.t.vice for four, similarly treat- i ing*£fenovich in the next over. Furley, who was scoring singles off the last ball of each over and thereby getting' the bowling, again hit Zenovich for a four and a six. Wallnutt replaced. Zenovich, and Furley hit him for a six,., two fours and a two in his first over, but was caught in .the long field off the last ball for 88. Furley, whose innings included five sixes and eight four,s> hit hard all through his innings and scored the extraordinary proportion of 88 out of a total of 97, which included two byes. H’ Henderson and Wallnutt opened Waihi’s innings to the bowling of Shand and Furley. Shand'’bowled Wallnutt in his second over, Henderson was bowled by Furley in. t,he next over. Martensen and Hen- ? derson batted steadily, and seeking was slow At 28 Martensen was bowl-t ' ed by Shand, who accounted for McManus IC runs’ later. Stamp; livened : things- up somewhat, .and runs came more freely. Marlin and Farrow ire- ’ lieved Fufley and Shand, but still ths score mounted up. At, 87 Furley relieved Martin, and in his third over bowled . Henderson, who had batted stubbornly for 24. Manning soon retired, well caught high up with one . hand by Martin, who with his next ball bowled Wallace. Furley and Farrow took two more wickets each, the total eventually reaching 137, giving Waihi a lead of 40 runs. The innings did not-Jast long, ,the last five wickets falling for 18. Stumps weire then drawn. Summing up the game, .'-where Paeroa is concerned the outstanding feature in the first innings was Furley’s innings. The rest- of the team could do little or nothing against Stamp, who is a left-handed bowler with a decided swerve . and a break, and Zenovich. Furley made 45 out of the 46 put ol for . the last wicket. , Paeroa’s bowling was fair, Farro-v and Furley coming out wich the best figures. . comfortably. - / • The following were the ■ scores t; PAEROA—First Innings.
