SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.
• “BREAKING UP” DAYSk PICNICS AND PRIZEGIVINGS. Several schools on the H.auraki Plains celebrated the cessation of the year’s work with picnics and prizegivings. The weather was not of the best for outdoor functions, but the little oiies made the best of the last day together, and the functions were most enojyable ones. KAIHERE SCHOOL. The Kaihere school children held their annual -picnic on Wednesday last, the picnic terminating in a social and dance, held at the local hall in the evening, when a large number of parents and friends attended. The hall was daintily decorated with roses and greenery. The musical programme ■was contributed to solely by the children. The boys' and girls opened with a recitation, the girls giving a song, then a recitation, the last item being a song entitled “Summer Time,” and sung by the boys and girls, A dialogue in which Misses M. Senior, A. McDonald, and G. Corcoran appeared was , greatly appreciated. The dance music was suppieci by Henderson’s orchestra, and Messrs D. Benny and H. Duffy were M’s.O. The following school prize-winners were announced: “Dux” prize, Mercedes Mason (standard II). Highest class marks: Standard VI., Mavis Senior 1, Gladys Corcoran 2 ; standard V., Elsie McDonald 1, Robert. Hooper 2 ; standard IV, Irene Perkin 1, Beth Duffy 2 ; standard 111, Audrey Boyd 1, Leonard Woodbridge 2 ; stands ard 11, Mercedes Mason 1, Frederick Davis 2 ; standard I, Clive Mclndbe 1, Jessie McDonald 2. The results of the'running events were as follows: Champion girl runner (220yds), Ivy McSkears 1; champion boy runner (220yds), Harold Woodbridge 1; married ladies’ 'race, Mrs' Senior 1, Mrs Bird 2-, men’s race,, Mr A. J. McDonald 1, F. Foote 2 , boys’ high jump, J. Duffy (4ft) 1, VHooper 2. The success of the picnic and social is largely due to the efforts of Miss Jones, assistant teacher, and Mr T. H. Whitwell, headmaster. WAITAKARURU FUNCTION.
A very successful breaking-up ceremony was’ held at the Waitakaruru school on Thursday. Mr C. W. Harris, chairman of the School Committee, thanked the •schoolmaster (Mr Griffiths) and the sewing mistress (Miss Harris) for the good work they had done during the past year. He also thanked the people of Waitakaruru' for contributing towards the cost of books and prizes’, and for the help, generally, which they had given the school committee. He then presented each pupil with a book, and four girls,, Rose Brown, Eileen Donaghy, Rita Harris, and Beryl Hunter, with special prizes for sewing. Cheers were given by the children, for their teachers, the school committee, the public of Waitakaruru, and Mr Harris. After singing the National Anthem a move was made to the schoolgrounds, where races, were organised. KEREPEEHI PICNIC. The Kerepeehi school children enjoyed a picnic On the school grpunds on Thursday. The arrangements were, well carried put by the school committee and the ladies attended to the serving of refreshments. Sports events formed the most important part of the programme, and there were many keen races. Each child who was’ not successful in winning a sports prize received a present. The following are the results of the various events : Girls, : Phyllis Frecklington 1, Winnie Jury 2; 5-9, Nellie Fisher 1, Muriel Jury 2. Boys, 10-14 : M. Troughton 1, H. Troughton 2 ; 5-9, Arthur Frecklington 1, Royce Carr. 2. Thread-tlhe-needle race: Girls, P. Frecklington 1, Eva. Rangi 2 ; boys, H. Troughton 1, Phillip Innis ■2. Sack race, Phillip Inriis 1, F. McConnor 2. Boot race, Rana Taylor 1, Dolly Connor 2. Animal race, Laurie Herkt 1, J. Hoff 2. Wheelbarrow race, Steward Rangi and J. Mprpeke 1. Egg and spoon race, Muriel Jury 1, R. Smith 2. Obstacle race, G. Dixon 1, Stewart Rangi 2. Walking race, Muriel Jury 1, O. Connor 2. "Simon Says” drill, Dolly Connor 1, Clarice Davis 2, Betty Smith 3.
