OHINEMURI COUNTY.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. . The oidinary monthly meeting of the above council, was held in the County Chambers on Wednesday last, when the following were present: Councillors A- R- Robinson (chair-, man), J. Johnson, H. M.. Corbett, A. - R. McGuire, W. F. Johnstone, S H. Morgan. The county clerk, Mr R. W. Evans, and the engineer, Mr E. Shaw, were also p'resent. WAIHI-WHANGAMATA ROAD. The district engineer, Public Works Department, wrote with reference to the proposals submitted by the Council for general repairs to the above road, estimated to cost £154 15s, and. • advised that, his department had given authority for £l5O free money to be issued.—-Received. FRANKTON ROAD BRIDGE. A request from the ratepayers on the Waihi Plains was received asking'”'the Council to use its influence with the Public Wonks Department to have ■ completed during the sunimei; weather the left bank approach to the Frankton Road bridge, as in its; present state it was most unsatisfactory. x Or. Corbett said he thought the Council should use its best endeavours to get the Public Works Department to complete the filling to the bridge and erect a suitable fence . along same. FRANKTON ROAD. Or. Corbett stated that in company with the chairman and engineer he had met the settlers interested in the above road, and he regretted that . they would not meet tjie Council by sanctioning a special loan for the repair of this road. He said that this matter .affected his own riding, and he was particularly desirlous of doing all-die could for the settlers concerned, and he would ask the Council to instruct the» engineer to prepare fresh estimates for the metalling of a portion of the old Tauranga and Ffankton roads, and that permission be given to him (Cr. Corbett) to'endeavour to raise a loan by petition over that amended area. This arrangement was agreed to by the meeting. .' USE GF GRADER. '. -Cr. Corbett asked if the engineer, could allow\th.e road grader to be used in the district after the holidays, as sdane of the'roads were ■ getting very bad and needed early. .. attention. ' The engineer said he would .endeavour to meet the wishes of Cr. Corbett, but it would be necessary for the settlers themselves to assist by supplying horse teams where ’required. . ..
OLD TE AROHA ROAD. Cr. W. F. Johnstone asked the . chairman if he would instruct that the £ for £ subsidy up to £5O be applied for at once and expended on the above road, and the engineer to call for-rtenders for the “''work, and such tenders to be submitted to the Council at its February meeting. The chairman said he .would be pleased to act as suggested. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the engineer, Mr El Shaw: A. J. Cox’s contract. for access to section 30, Waitawiheta, has been completed. p. ’ Baine’s contract for metalling Te Aroha Road is nearing completion. When this work is finished I intend blinding and rolling s,ame. The roller, is now on the ground for this purpose. On representations being made to ' the Mines Department for authority for Whangamata Road grant the same \ > came to hand* almost immediately.’ In company with the chairman (Mr A. R. Robinson), Crs. Corbett anlL Morgan, and the county (Jerk (Mr. Evans), I met the settlers at the . Waihi Borough Chambers re loan for reading portion of Waihi Plains., The •scheme was placed before them, and it was decided to ‘have their-sanction . obtained by. petition. Since then I , have been informed that the settlers , have rejected it. Re Jasper Browne’s application for change of road through section: 21, Block 111, Aroha Survey District. In company with Kenny Bros., surveyors, I inspected the new route and decided that the new road offered will be more serviceable and easier in construction than .the present, one. T;ie ’ survey has been made, and this usual ..j procedure for opening and closing the above is being proceeded with. The cost of same is to be borne by Mr Browne. Owing to the breaking of the surface of the metal on Snake Hill on the main Paeroa-Waihi road I found it necessary to place some 20 cubic yards of material .from ; tbe Waihi Mine tip for binding same. Wherever this class .of material has baen tried -s it has always been found a success-
