At the Borough Council meeting last night complimentary references and seasonable greetings were exchanged between His Worship the Mayor, councillors, and staff. Owing to the/court Room being used in connection with the re-count of electoral votes the sitting of the J.P. Court was held In the publie office of the Court this morning. H. B. Woods applied to the Borough Council for permission to screen pictures/ at the Central Theatre on Christmas night. The application was granted, subject to the picture programme being approved by His Wore ship the Mayor.
At the Police Court this morning, before Mr W. F. North, J'.P., William Brunei! was charged with using indecent language within the hearing of persons on Puke Road on the 13th inst. Accused pleaded not guilty, and decided to be de.alt with, summarily. Mr. J. F. Montague stated that as ne was coming up Puke Road with his wife Brunell came out and used certain language in a voice that could be heard a considerable distance away. In his statement. Brunell said that he-lost Iliis temper his horse had been lent, and in his excitement be used the language. Accused’s previous record shows that on October 4 last yean he was charged with being drunk, and was fined 10s, and on the same date, for using obscene language, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence-when called upon, and to leave the town. The Police stated that in view of accused obtaining work the warrant was not executed, but accused had not taken the cihiance offered. Brunell was convicted and fined £2, with costs 19s. He was granted 14 days in which to pay.
Tenders for the seWerage contract in the Corbett, King, and Setln Street area were received by the Borough Council last night, and the question of acceptance was held over meantime.
We have to acknowledge from the Government Printer the New Zealand Official Year-book for 1923. -'This is the thirty-first issue of this valuable publication. The present number follows, generally, the sSme lines as its immediate predecessor, which marked the inauguration of several new departures. Tenders are invited by the N.Z. Cooperative Dairy Co.; Ltd., for the whole of the buttermilk from the Ngatea butter factory for the remainder of the season ending May 31, 1923. At the Borough Council meeting last night applications for building permits were received Prom Messrs L. G. Smith, P. Barakat, W. L. Lawrence, and R. T- Roberts. The permits were granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws.
