BOWLING.
GOLDFIELDS STARS. A WIN FOR PAEROA. ' On Saturday last the Paeroa Bowling Club sent .a representative team to Matamata to endeavour to win tihe coveted trophies from the present holders (Matamata). Recognising the fact that there had been numerous attempts by the various Goldfields clubs to ,win the Stars from the apparently invincible Matamata club, the selectors of the Paeroa club sent w.hat they considered the strongest and best-balanced combination the club could turn out fpr the event, and their selection was justified by the team bringing the Stars to Paeroa after one of the finest games of bowls played in the district. The teams were. —Matamata: Buchanan, Stewart, Coote, Flett (skip). Paeroa; Busby, Garry, Pinder, Wells (skip). Briefly describing the game, Matamata had the advantage up to .the eighth head, wihen the scores were: Matamata 9, Paeroa 2. On the ninth head scored a 5 ; then followed three “dead” .heads in succession. On the twelfth head Paeroa scored another 5 points, making the game, Paeroa 13, Matamata 10. Matamata replied with a 2 and a 3. On the sixteenth head tihe game stood 15 alb Matamata scored two points on each of the next two heads. On the ninteenth head Paeroa secured a 4, mak-. ing the game 19 .all. Flett put up a beautiful drive in the twentieth head and gained one point, leaving Paeroa one down and one head to go. This last head was undoubtedly the best and most altered head of tjhe game, and culminated in Pinder playing a magnificent trailing shot with his last bowl, and thus enabling Paerba to lie 2 up. Wells then played a scientific block with His first bowl arid made the head • secure. Flett, playing slightly wide with his last; bowl, turna Paeroa bowl intp “kitty,” leaving Paeroa 3 points up, and the game finished, Paeroa 22, Matamata 20.
Each member of both teams played most consistently and exceptionally well throughout the game. On some of the heads the position was changed by every bowl played. The Paeroa bowlers speak in high terms of praise /regarding the splendid manner hospitality was extended to them by the Mritamata.. residents, and they also highly .appreciate the true sporting way the onlookers voiced their applause foir the various difficult shots which were played and came off successfully. The ladies were as enthusiastic in barracking as were the men. CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT AT AUCKLAND. The following placers have. been selected to represent the Paeroa club at the Auckland tournament,, commencing on Boxing Day: N. C. Busby, A. J. Garry, j. Pinder, G. H. Taylor (skip). The team is a particularly strong one, and should give a good account of itself. ,
