REPARTRIATION

A PROGRESS REPORT. The following progress, return as at 1 November 20 has 1 been issued by the ; Repatriation Department: | The Department has placed 28,567 ' discharged soldiers in employment, and there are ,at the present time 113 names oh the “employment wanted" register (Auckland, 36; Wellington, , 54Christchurch, 13 ; Otago,, 10). I In addition to 1438 student? who have been assisted financially with, grants for, the payment of fees and ! the purchase of text books, the De--1 partment has vocational training for 6100 partially disabled i soldiers, apprentices', etc., aha of this number 5923 have completed thpir courses and have been absorbed th various industries. During the month of November 2 men commenced training, and 26 completed their courses. /There are 177 men still being trained, [ namely, 90 subsidised, workers and ' apprentices in private workshops or I factories ; 39 at Ruakura and Tau--j iherenikau training farms, etc.; and 48 others' at universities etc. /The total amount expended jtb'date oji the provisibtn of facilities for training an?) .for the sustenance ‘of trainees is £395,966-. Loans to assist discharged soldiers to establish themselves in businesses ’jor professions 'have been granted in 6331 cases, at a cost of £1,152,924. .>A further 15i601 men have received advances totalling £744,583 for the purchase of household furniture or tools of trade, and 4610 having been granted financial assistance in 'other directions. Altogether; no less than 62,647 men have received assistance from the Department to ‘the extent of £2,306,681. Of the total amounpof £2,306,681 expended on behalf of soldiers £l,897,505 represents loan advances for the establishment of businesses or for the purchase of household furniture, etc., and up tot October 31 last the Department had collected in respect thereof! £1,14'4,728. Repayments, therefore, already to 60 per cent, of the total loan Advances.
