HAURAKI PLAINS.
WORKS IN THE COUNTY. The Haurakl Plains county engineer, Mr J. Higgins, reported as follows' at Mondays Council meeting: I am pleased to 1 earn < that tl/e financial position affecting the opening out of the Hikutaia quarry and providing the necessary mea.ns for transit of metal has somewhat improved, "and I am now in a position to get the work-under way. HIKUTAIA STREAM. ’The contract for cleaning out ami putting the stream in order is nearing completion, and yvill be available ’’for punting metal early in the, new year, or when required. Mr Alley has agreed to sign articles by which the Council will, have the right to use sufficient ground at the upper side of the Hikutaia bridge for delivering metal into punts for the modest sum of £2_per annum, the Council to pay the mooring of the gate back to a ; point that has been agreed upon. HOPPERS. Portion of the timber required for the hopper to be erected at Fisher's/ Landing, Nethertpn, is on the ground and the balance is expected in a day or so. The work in connection with the erection of the hopper Is underthken by Mr W. Hedley, ot Tahuna, who is now on the ground. NGATAIPUA EAST ROAD. The contract for forming 32 chains on this road is now completed and ready to receive'metal. ORONGO-KOPUARAHI ROAD. Thirty-two, chains qf formation have been completed, ready for metalling when money becomes available. TURUA-ORONGO ROAD. I have arranged for the surfaceman to repair the road with metal’ from Towers’ and Turua dumps’, the carting to be done with the county team. PEKAPEKA ROAD. Fair progress’ is being made in forming this road, and the contract, comprising one mile of formation, should be completed before the new ■ year. HAMILTON’S ROAD. The contractor has made slow progress in forming this road, but I have his assmance .that two teams' will be on the job earfy this week in order to complete the work before the holidays. MTRANDA-WAITAKARIURU ROAD. I have set out two contracts for forming portions of this road. One contract,, amounting to 2(R chains, is let to Mr G. A. Coxfhead at the rate of 70s per chain and another section of road containing 45 chains of formation is let to Mr W. Coxhead for 25s per chain. MIRANDA WEST ROAD.
Some 20 chains of this road 'have been formed to widths from 9ft. ’o 12ft. The work was carried out. by the Council’s sunfaceman and Mr R. Slack. I might specially mention that Mr Slack has given a. very considerable amount of his time and supplied one team of horses and plant free of; charge to the Council in order to gain access to his property, which is fronting this road. TAHUNA RIDING. Approximately three miles of the Tahuna-Ohinewai road have been pegged. The levelling of same and the plans for forming the road will be put in hand at. the earliest opportunity. MAUKORO BRIDGE SITE. I have arranged to accompany Mr Taylor, Lands Department engineer, to Tahuna during his visit this week to definitely fix on a site for the bridge, after which I shall prepare a plan showing the approach roads to same.
