(Own Correspondent.) SOCIAL. A successftil social, 'held in th* hall oti Thursday night, m aid of the hall funds, terminated the series, all of which have proved as remunerative as they have been enjoyable. In presenting the prizes won during the evening Mr E. J. Walters congratulated the ladies wlho organised the series of socials on the success of their efforts. EXAMINATIONS., The pupils of! the district' school who u’ndei’jwent examination for the proficiency certificates at Kopu on Tuesday, returned jubilant, all having obtained the coveted 'certificate. The examination, which was conducted by Inspector Munro, was, they say, very hard, especially in grammar and arithmetic. In wishing the examinees the compliments of the. season, Mr Munro stated that all proficiency certificates would be withheld until the year’s attendance at school had been completed. An examination in history and geography would be held near the end of the presnt term, the papers for which would be set either by himself or by the headmasters concerned, a report of the marks gained to be forwarded by him as evidence that instructions had been carried out. He advised teachers to devote as much .time as .. possible to .these subjects, which were too often neglected. The inspector's good wishes were heartily reciprocated TENNIS. At a meeting Of the committee of the Tennis Club held on Monday night it was unanimously decided to postpone the formal opening of the courts until the bowling green and croquet lawn were completed, it being considered more satisfactory to have one big function than three compartively small ones. In. the meantime, as the courts were ready, local players ■ could obtain practice as soon as the net posts were in-position and thp grounds marked off.

BOWLING GREEN. After being cut and rolled the bowling green looks well, the grass' being thick? strong, and luxuriant. The weeding of the couquet lawn Is almost finished, while work on the pavilion Is in active progress. That finished, the hedges cut, and some ■needed titivation of the grounds Completed, the park should in a very short time be ready fpr the 'official opening; MAORI ELECTION. The elecion fpr. a native representative fpr the Western Maori electorate was held in the district school ; on Wednesday, Mr J- Elliot .acting as deputy returning officer, with. Mr Kiri Tukukino as Maori associate. The election proceeded very quietly, not the smallest sign of* interested excitement being apparent. Tekouru Katana was the favourite candidate, polling 16, Maui Ngatata Pomare 12, Patena 1, and Mawhete 0.
