THE ELECTIONS.

Big Majority for Mr. Poland. Many Changes and. Surprises. Government Losses. Labour and Opposition Gains. OHINEMURI ELECTORATE.

At an early hour yesterday morning a stir was made to gather the electors into the Centra] Theatre polling booth. Favoured with fine weather, and the fact that both the electoral as well as the licensing issues were being keenly fought out, the streets throughout, the whole day, and especially in the afternoon, presented an animated - appearance, and it is pretty safe to predict that all possible votes were recorded. The polling was much heavier than on previous occasions, over one thousand electors exercising their rights. The Returning officer, Mr C. W. Carver, is to be complimented on the completeness of his arrangements and tbe promptness with which the results from the whole electorate were made known, easily constituting a record against previous elections. The deputy returning officer, Mr Arthur Bush, announced the result of the Paeroa booth at about 6.20 p.m. In the evening the results, both local and the whole of the Dominion, were screened at the “ Gazette ” in front of which a large .and goodnatured crowd had assembled. As the various results went up cheers and counter demonstrations given by the different factions. The vote for Mr Hugh Poland, for this electorate prjoved to be a very decided one, and nearly double the result of the figures of the 1919 election. As soon as tihe results were known Mr Poland was received with great enthusiasm. At Waihi, Waikino, and Paeroa, where he returned thanks, there were scenes of cheering. In Paeroa. Mr Poland, gave due credit to Ihis various committees for their successful efforts on his behalf, and after briefly thanking them all, lie congratulated bis opponent, Mr SS. Allen, on the fight he had put up, aiid his sportsmanlike attitude throughout, and in conclusion called for" three cheers for the unsuccessful candidate, which were heartily responded to by the crowd present. In connection with the screening of the results we have to thank Rev. Dobson for the use of Ihis lantern, Messrs R. E. Mitchell, electrician, J. Hubbard, J. Ryan, and others for their valuable and kindly help. A word of praise and grateful thanks is also due to Mr J. G. McDougall and his post office staff for the very prompt seryices rendered, not only for the telephone cominunicatiqns, but also for the quick despatch of l the press messages.
