Education is the raw material of industry, of science, of all civilized progress. Tn the absence of Senior-Sergeant O’Grady Constable McClinchy conducted the police cases at the local Court on Monday. Travelling requisites in large variety for the holiday season have fust been opened, up by D. McWatters. Special attention is- directed to his advertisement on our first page. Now that traffic on the Wailii Beach road is,rapidly increasing a word of warning to motor drivers should not be amiss. More car,e in negotiating the various corners, principally in the direction of sounding the horn, is apparently a matter requiring attention. It is obvious that if proper care is not exercised a. more or less serious accident is likely to take place.—Telegraph.
An interesting collection of some 50 envelopes from various countries' from sick people who had appealed for his assistance has been sent by Rat ana to the Wanganui Herald, and are now on exhibition. The practice of senidng insecurely and improperly packed parcels through the post is one of; the mhny difficulties the postal officials have to contend with. - Yesterday by the, mail a thin cardboard box of cherries was received at the local post office, and the box, in transit, had been smashed. In consequence, the bottom of the mail bag resembled a fruit salad—stems, stones, and juice were hopelessly mixed up with: parcels and mail matter, and it is a wonder that some of the contents of the mail-bag were not damaged. Offenders in this respect should be heavily fined, as serious consequences are likely to result, not only to themselves, but to others, who are liable to have tlieir postal matter damaged by contamination.
On account of the Paeroa sliow on Wednesday and Thursday of next week, the Kiwi Bacon Co. have altered the date of receiving pigs at Paeroa from Wednesday to Tuesday, the 12th. Tn the weight-guessing competition at the Waikato Show, Mr A. E. Say, butcher, Paeroa, gained first prize for bullock (correct weight 8501bs), 899 ; third in weight of cow; and second in the individual weight, in each of the four classes. The growth of grass on the Hauraki Plains is now almost phenomenal. Everywhere there is' ah abundance of feed and the stock is incapable of keeping the grass down. Owing to Dalgety and Co. altering the date of their Paeroa sale from tomorrow (Thursday) to to-day, many people were unable to make their arrangements accordingly, consequently their was an exceptionally small yarding of stock, and buyers were conspicuous by their absence. Mr Goodfellow (managing director of' the New Zealand Co operative Dairy Co ) with Messrs G. Buchanan and W. E. Hales (directors;), and Mr W. Y. Kirkman (■superintendent), ma'le a flying visit to the Hauraki Plains last week. Mr, Goodfellow was much impressed with the possibilities of the Plains from a producing point of view.
