WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer’s report fori the period ending November 30, 1922, was read at the monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council on Friday as follows “P. Baine’? coptract for metalling • Paeroa-Te Aroha Road is well ad u vanced. Also, A. J. Cox is making good progress with access to section 30, Waitawheta. Tenders .are called for sanding 30 chains of Mill Road and close at 2 p.m. this day. I have had the formation for the above formed up with the, grader, and it is now ready to receive the sand. The authority for Whangamata Road grant lias not yet come to hand, and as this road is closed tor Gaffic, and. the travelling public is inconvenienced thereby, I would recommend telegraphing to the Minister re the delay. A start has been made in repairing the three bridges on the Golden Cross road. The Waitekauri bridge is in a very bad state, but when the present repairs arc effected it will last for some time.” It was resolved to telegraph to the Minister with reference to the delay in issuing authority for Whangamata Road. “J found it necessary to place 30 — cubic yards of metal for repairing . holes on the Waihi-Tauranga road, . and the same was delivered" on the , ground for Bs' a yard under schedule D. “The leaks at the reservior were partially stopped, but a little more requires to be done, and advantage will now be taken on account of thepresent rain to-finish same. “Application by Leopold and others for road access.—l inspected the site, and there is no surveyed road giving this portion Oft the district access, "X only from Whangamata Road, through ■ Angle’s property, to the Ohinemuri River, where a large bridge would be required. This . is' unthinkable. The only other way is to try and arrange with the Grand Junction Gold Mining Co., who have a chain reserve for a tramway, and with their permission the road could be constructed on the inner side of the tramline. Another alternative would be to arrange with Mr Angle, whose property crosses the creek, to allow - a road to be taken on the north side of his property, which is in its rough state, and give him the first-mention-ed road in exchange.” This matter was left in the hands of the engineer to arrange.
“The Plains Special Rating Area, west of Waihi-Tauranga Road. —On the Old Tauranga Road it is proposed to metal in such places as is most required to give access to the various roads leading from it to Waihi. Five chains only of the above road have been metalled, and it is now proposed to do 102 'chains. “It is proposed to complete the metalling on the Waimata Road., Fori. Road, and Fra.nkton Road, all leading from the Old Tauranga Road.. The cost of the proposed scheme is attached. Taking the schedule of the Act at a basis for calculation of the amount of interest and sinking fund that would be required for a loan of £2300 at 6% per cent, is £2OO, approximately. On the capital value ofthe proposed special rating area (£27,915) this would require a rateof l%d, but if the revenue derived from “thirds” . (roughly, about £4O) was allowed to be applied, to the payment of interest, etc., the rate collected would probably be reduced to ' There are subsidies to the amount of £4OO available towards these roads. “It is to be hoped the settlers will see the necessity of having portions of the roads in the Waihi district metalled, for it is no use spending money on formation, for themature of. the soil is so light that the rain and winds soon cause the formation to disappear.”
