CHURCH BAZAARS.
FUNCTION AT WAITAKARURU. FOR SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL. The Waitakar.uru Hall, presented an animated appearance yesterday, the occasion being the opening day of a bazaar to raise funds for the erection of a soldiers’ memorial chupeh under the auspices of the Methodist Church. The promoters had spared no effort to make the interior of the hall, attractive, the decorations of greenery being particularly lavish. The stalls were well, arranged and carried a large assortment of; salable articles. The bazaar was declared officially open by Mr J. C. Miller, chairman Of the Hauraki Plains County Council, who congratulated the ladies on the remarkable display. He hoped that when they built the church they would not insult it by leaving it empty. The Rev. D. C. Stewart, Presbyterian minister of Tuma, expressed his pleasure at being present and also congratulated the ladies’ on the fine display. The Rev. W. J. Enticott, Methodist minister of Paeroa, also expressed his appreciation of the ’success of the function. The stalls were all in charge of capable attendants, the duties being detailed ,as follows : Mesdames Bur;dess and. Gordon, fancy stall; Mes 1 - dames Cummings and Barlow, plain sewing; Mesdames Hedges and Otter, produce : Misses Burdess and V. Harris, sweets ; Miss L. Burdess, art gallery ; Mr C. Stretton, bran-tub; Mesdames' Elliott, Fraser, Stretton, Miss Henderson, and Mr F. Stretton, refreshments. There were also a number of others commanding sixpences for guessing competitions. Last evening a musical programme was given in conjunction with, the bazaar, the items being rendered oy Ngatea talent. Messrs Hobin and Titchener rendered solos, Messrs Schultz and. Hobin a duet, and a quartette composed of Messrs Schultz, Hobin, Titchener, and Kennedy gave an item which was greatly appreciated. ' It is as yet a matter for, conjecture what the proceeds will be, but judging from the first day’s work the sum which will be aavilable for the erection of the new church should be considerable. The bazaar continues today and this evening.
