“THE BALKANS.”
Sir—Mr Mayn in his second epistle t to the “Balkans’” makes some very funny remarks. He states that it gives him much pleasure to depj' that ’ ;he has been delegated by the Hauraki plains Council to write in its defence, and judging by the way he has made bad matters look worse I should imagine the pleasure is not all his. Most, of us are aware that the Council has f a pastmaster m the art of defending thein actions, and I would strongly advise Cr. Mayn to leave the matter in those hands in future. Regarding the motor roller, my friend states that the Council was under no legal obligation to purchase it. Well,, then, we must assume, that there must have been a very strong moraj. obligation to comiplete the purchase. Tn negotiating for Eire roller in the first place the Council can claim the excuse of rashness and inexperience of youth, but since that time it is common knowledge that they were perfectly well aWare that they had fallen in pretty badly over the purchase, and that a more suitable roller could oe purchased for less than half the cost. Further, I would like to suggest to Cr. Mayn that when Messrs Booth, McDonald and Co. are repainting the roller that he get them to paint out' the Council’s past record if possible, so that we can make a fresh start on more sound and businesslike lines. BALO ANTS.
