A SHOCKING TRAGEDY

CHILD ASSAULTED WITH AXE. VICTIM SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES. A shocking tragedy occurred at Thames this morning. A Mrs Bessie A. Bennett, of Augusta Street, Thames,’ a well-known resident, arose th’c morning about six o’clock and went into the backyard and, picking up an axe, returned indoors and without any reason struck her nine-year-old son several heavy blows with the face of the axe. The child’s screams quickly brought help, and the unfortunate victim was conveyed to the hospital, where very little hope of recovery was expected. Mrs Bennett lias been arrested, but can give no reason for her terrible act. Later advice received from the Police Department, Thames was to the effect that the boy, Nelson Coombcs Bennett, has succumbed to his injuries.
