POSTAL MATTERS.

CHEAPER POSTAGE SOUGHT.

CHAMBER ENDORSES PROPOSAL,

At the Chamber of Commerce meeting last night a letter was received from the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce asking the chamber’s support to the proposal for penny postage fpr invoices and unsealed printed matter for town deliveries, and penny postage up to 4bz for commercial papers and printed matter within the Dominion, Tn support Of the suggestions the secretary forwarded the following copy of a letter sent to the Minister on the matter:

“As business men we know from observation and personal expcriencs that the delivery of invoices and monthly statements are, however, conveniently possible, made by private messengers, office boys' and gins being largely employed for this purpose. It would be much more expedient to post such matter en bio? in the nearest post box. “It is well known among business men that the post office is not nearly so extensively used for the transmission of circulars' and advertising matter as prior tp 1914. This direct appeal through the post has special advantages for certain classes of advertising matter, as complementary or in addition to newspaper advertising.

“Many prominent business men feel that were you to reduce the present rates, as indicated above, you would accelerate commercial deliveries and induce a wider use of the. post office for advertising purposes, and directly augmentt the income of of your department. “My Chamber is sensible of the serious aspect of this request, knowing that you cannot afford tp jeopardise your sources of revenue, but believe that your department, being .a trading concern, would probabaly get such an accession of new business that your rvenue would be a,s the service is one that responds to improved or extended services. “ You will, no doubt, gp into this matter very carefully/, because it is of great importance to both your department' and the business community, and whatever may be in the interests of both must be to the advantage of the public generally?’ On Mr Leadhi’s motion the proposal was supported.
