netherton. _______ i . TENNIS DANCE. A very successful dunce was held in the Netherton Hall tin Friday evening, the object being to raise funds for the newly formed tennis club. The hall was beautifully depprated with roses, and evergreens and streamers, and the success pB all arrangements suggested that great care had been taken over, every detail.. It was gratifying to the promoters that the function was well attended, there being large numbers of visitors frpm Kerepeehi, Ngatea, and Hikutaia. The floor was in good order, and excellent music, was rendered. Mr Hibbs was, M.O. SPORTS-GROUND. An acre of .land was acquired recently at a very low figure from Mr Luke by the local Sports and Recreation Club, .which was formed a month or two ago. .It is intended that the ground will be used for recreation purposes, and among the branches of the club will be tennis; croquet, and bowling. The land has liready been fenced' by public subscription. Work on the tennis courts is commencing to-day, when a working bee is gathering to put the ground in order. It is hoped to have the courts-ready in about, a month’s time. ■

NGATEA.

TENNIS OPENING.

The Ngatea Tennis dub was fortunate in its 1 selection of a day for its season’s opening, which was successfully held on Saturday. A bright sun in a cloudless sky and a cool westerly breeze made it a real summer's day—ideal for a tennis outing. Taking full advantage of the fipe day after the recent unpleasant weather, about 100 tennis enthusiasts gathered at the Ngatea court, the visitors including representatives' of the Hopai, Kerepeehi, Kaihere, Huirau Road, Turua, and Kopuarahi clubs. ■ Games were played throughout the day from early in the forenobn till the fading light made it difficult to see the small white spheres, the sets being arranged by the president (Mr W. G Hayward) and. the secretary (Mr R. G. Hemmings). Keen interest was aroused in one set of men s doubles, the contestants being Devereaux and Lowden (Kerepeehi) v. Murphy and Coppins (Hopai). The latter pair won a good game by 6—3.

At an appropriate interval the P re_ s'dent extended a warm welcome to the visitors, and said it was gratifying to see so many present He apologised for there not being two courts available, so that they could have more games, but they had an ehergetic committee which was full of plans, and perhaps before long they would have two courts. . Refreshments' were served in the schoolhouse by the lady members of the ’club. . ' '

After a very pleasant day’s outing a dance was held in. the evening. Misses R. and E Hi If ord were responsible for the music,' Miss Louise Mack, who w.as also an interested spectator at the opening, obliging with several extras. Vocal items were given by Messi's Hobin,, McCormick. and Titchengg. • Mr Hayward was M.C.

.. ELECTRIC POWER. Officials of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board /isited Ngatea last week in. company with Mr E. Taylor, resident Lands Drai'nage engineer. It is understood that the Board intends to put a cable under the river on the south side of the bridge and with the Lands-Depart-ment to make arrangements for* dredging the river at this point.

TURUA. SPORTS CLUB. The management committee pf the Hauraki Plains Athletic and Sports Club met at Turua pn Wednesday to review the past year’s financial position and to make arrangements for the coming season. Mr G. Gray, president, was in the chair. The president said that the club's position was very satisfactory, for which he complimented the members. The club, he said, owed a great deal to the late Mr R. McLean, through whose death the club had suffered a great loss. On the president’s motion it was decided to place oh record the club’s appreciation of the late Mr McLe'an’s efforts on behalf of the club anti to send a letter of condolence conveying the deepest sympathy to Mrs. McLean. The sccertary, Mr J. Gibson, announced that it was’ very gratifying to note that the bank account showed a credit balance o>f £6B 19s. It was decided to hold the annual sports gathering on January 17, providing that this date did not clash with other events. Messrs Gray, Porteous, Chapman, and Gardiner were deputed to inspect th.e grounds available and .to decide on which the sports are to be held. It was also decided to hold the usual sports picnic on New Year’s Day and to hold a dance in the eve'ning.
