WORKS IN THE BOROUGH

BOROUGH COUNCIL The following reports were submitted to the Borough Council meeting last evening: FINANCE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. Your Committee begs to report that during the month the revenue has amounted to £354 8s lid, and expenditure to £346 13s sd. Including the attached .accounts, which your. Committee recommends for payment, the balance of the District Fund account will, amount to £6BO Ils sd. Your Committee has gone into the question of the provision of a fire brigade station. We recommend (1) that a building be authorised as saggested by the Fire Council, and a ten-foot addition be built to rear, of same for the foreman’s shied, at a cost of approximately £300; (2) that provision be made to finance same by providing £125 put of the present year’s revenue, and £175 the next financial year, to be available on April. 1;, 1922 ; (3) that the fire brigade be urged to endeavour to raise what is needed for maintenance .'o March, 1924, in view of the heavy charge the building will, be on the next two years’ revenue. While this will be a heavy immediate charge,, we recognise the urgency, and consider, it best to face the expenditure r.ather than make any involved arrangements. We recomnjend that .the'sum of £lO placed on the estimates as a grant to the Library be paid forthwith, FOREMAN’S REPORT. I have tp report that the following work has been put in hand during the month; Hughendon Street, Wharf Street, Francis Street, Princess Street, and Queen Street footpaths have been chipped and cleaned and __ screenings spread on same. These paths are now finished with the exception of about a day’s work. The usual maintenance work has also been carried pub’ during the month. ’ . 1

We have now made a start on the renewing of the surface -of Belmont Road, but owing to the inclement weather have not been able to proceed with same. I intend to proceed with this work during the coming month:, weather permitting.

WORKS COMMITTEES REPORT. Your Committee begs to report that during the month the staff ha? been engaged in the usual maintenance work, and has also proceeded with the works authorised by the Council. The' etxensive repairs to Belinpnt Road have now -been, commenced This work will be pushed on during the coming month if the weather is suitable.

Tenders have been called for the cleaning of -the main outfall drain from Rye Land to Quarry Road, the cross drain to Station Road, and the drains from Station Road to King Street and Thames Road. We recommend that Messrs Hayward Bros’, application tp have water laid on to their new premises' in William Street be granted, subject to compliance with the water by-laws.

BUILDING COMMITTEES REPORT. Your Committee begs to repbrt that during the month applications have been received from' Mr Roberts for alterations and additions to houses in Station Road and Rye Lane, and two from Mr Scott for alteration to Mr Walls’ shop and minor* repairs to a house ip William Street. These applications ’have been granted by your committee, and,we ask your approval of our action.
