BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the abpve council was held at the Borough Chambers last evening. Present : His Worship the Mayor (Mp PE. Breaan) and Councillors VuglaG Marshall, Lamb, Leach, Silcock, Bain. Edwards, and the town clerk, Mr P. C. Farley. His Worship apologised for the absence of Cr. F.latt, who, he stated, had met with an accident that was proving more serious than was at first anticipated, and expressed sympathy with that councillor, TAR SPRAYER. Messrs J. Hopkirk and Co., Auckland, wrote quoting a tar;-spraying machine and a tar macadam mixer suitable for the use of the bprbugh. The letter was received. PUBLIC LIBRARY GRANT. A letter was received from the secretary of the public library asking the Council if it could see its way to immedaitely pay the annual grant, and pointing out that the library committee was badly in need of funds to maintain the present reading room, and intimating that the funds had been seriously affected by the Government withdrawing the subsidy. It was decided to at once pay the £lO grant tp the committee, and that any further help to be considered by the Finance Committee. DRAIN TESTERS. B. H. Franklin, Inspector of Health, asked the Council to purchase two 4in drain testers, Jones’ for preference.
It was decided to at once purchase two .testers similar to the ones quoted by the inspector. LEASE OF BOROUGH OFFICE. Messrs E. N. Miller and Son, solicitors. Thames, wrote acknowledging the Council’s decision to accept tihe increase of rent for the borough office as from, the 7th inst. They also wrote stating that they were prepared to connect the offices up with the' sewerage scheme provided the Council would sign a lease of the office for a term of three years and meet the rates on the property. His Worship said he was not in favour of a three years’ lease of the premises, and he was decidedly against the Council having to pay the rates.
It was decided to write tp the solicitors and state that the Council could not see its way to undertake the lease of the premises for a term of three years and be held responsible for the rates, and at the same time point out that it was-compulsory for owners of property to link up with the sewerage scheme. PAEROA-POKENO LINE. The chairman of the Auckland Railway and Development League wrote relative th making an effort to get the £5OOO voted for the PaeroaPokeno section o£ line spent before the vote lapsed oh March 31 next, and that endeavours be made to have the link of the Tauranga-Waihi line closed; then, owing to congestion at Frankton Junction, connection with. Paero.a-Ppkeno would have to he made.
The Council decided ,to accord its hearty support to the League. WATER CONNECTION.
Hayward Bros, applied for a water connection to their new premises in Williams Street and enclosed the necessary fee.
The application was granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws. ' BUILDING PERMITS. R. Roberts, carpenter,, applied for permission to erect additions op two houses, one estimated to cost £75 and the other £6s.—Granted.
A Scott, carpenter, applied for permission to make to two buildings at the estimated cost of £6 and £l6, respectively.—Granted. ENTRANCE TO I POUND. Cr. Silpock stated that the ppundkeeper was desirous pf having a better entrance made to the borough pound, stating that there was difficulty in getting stock into the yards. His Worship said that certain improvements would be carried out to Bennett Street in the hear future, and the matter would then receive consideration. NEW POST OFFICE. On the motion of Cr. JBCarshatU, secended by Cr. Leach, it was decided to write to the Prime Minister and express the Council’s appreciation of the fact thiat £5OOO for 2 new post office for Paeroa had been granted, and respectfully request that owing to the etxreme urgency for better facilities and accommodation that this money be expended early in the new year.
BAD PIECE OF ROAD. Cr. Vug]ar drew the Cpuncil’s attention to the very bad state of Fraser Street from the Public Works Office corner to the butter factory, and stated that owing to the bad holes in the road a can of cream, valued at £5, had been jolted out of a cart and spilt. He pointed put that there was a large amount of heavy traffic on that, piece of read seven days a week, and lie considered it was high time something was done to improve it. ‘‘lt is the worst piece of road in the borough,” Cr. Vuglar concluded. It was decided to draw the attention of the foreman to it, with a view to having improvements effected. BOROUGH CONTRACTS. Tenders for cleaning the main outfall drain in Rye Lane were received as follows : B. Bruneil 12s pep chain., Cockroft 6s, Novich 6s, Thompson 14s, and Moorhouse 15s.
The tender of Mr Cockroft was accepted, subject to his signing up the contract according to the specifications.
Tenders for cleaning cross drain in Station R.oad area for a distance of about 36 chains: B, Brunnell 12s per chain,, B. Christie 12s, Cockroft 14s, Novich 15s, Thompson 16s, Moorhouse 17s.
The tender pf Mr Christie was accepted.
